Is there a way to limit the data that the Facebook Messenger app uses on my cell phone?

I just downloaded the FB Messenger app a few weeks ago. I resisted for a long time because I am not into apps if I can avoid them. They use up data and battery life.

The Messenger app I felt was almost essential, since if someone pm’s me on FB and I’m not on a computer, there’s no way of knowing whether it’s time sensitive or not, important or not, etc.

Is there a way of limiting the data that the Messenger app uses?

Disable autoplay on videos.
Use the Facebook Lite app, it uses less data.
Use it on WIFI whenever you can.
I’m not sure about increasing battery life.
