Is it really going to be dark for 14 days in February? (Details)

Asked by MrGrimm888 (19001points) January 22nd, 2017

I just saw an article that said NASA claims that in February the Earth will be dark for 14 days. Something about gases from Jupiter hitting the Sun…

Any knowledge on the subject?

Can you add the article?

That’s a silly hoax. NASA didn’t really say such a thing. hoaxers often claim NASA said something silly
like that.

Yeah no

That is Elvis on Mars wrong.

Wait, sorry, new administration. Yes, that might be on the new “improved” NASA site. Along with Elvis on Mars.

Huh? This makes no sense.

Only in the North Pole.

It could be “darker” in some way not noticeable by human eyes. Solar radiation hitting Earth is not constant.

Yes, and they are expecting snow along the equator to last for three or four days after about a week of darkness.
When the episode has passed it will be followed by an incredible solar flare which will burn an enormous crater searing away most of Africa.

Wait that was from the new Administration in the Trump Towers that said that.

I’ve since researched this a little better. Apparently it was supposed to have happened in November before the most recent theory/story….

Probably just B.S.

Thanks for all your contributions though.

I guess we’ll see in February.

Please quote your sources when you ask questions like this. NASA public info is very easy to look up as is the weather service info around the world not to mention the European Space Agency.

Ha ha – the equivalent of 14 days in Feb: half of each day will be dark. That is called night. The other half of each day will be light. That is called day. Multiply half by 28 days in Feb = 14 days of darkness in Feb. Ha ha!

How dark is dark? Here we get weather inversions and it can get fairly dark and foggy for a fairly long time. But it has nothing to do with what is beyond the fog bank.

cazzie's avatar

@kritiper but that would be weather. and what @RocketGuy was speaking of is the dark/light inversion based on one’s location on the planet in relevance to latitude. what @MrGrimm888 was inferring is that the entire planet will be dark because of some interference from our planetary neighbours. Now, I’m asking for sources from @MrGrimm888 information so I can source check. I know people at NASA and the NOAA so his story would be easy to check out. I just need him to tell me where he heard this.

@cazzie . I have a new lock screen on my phone that shows news stories. I usually read news on yahoo, or Huffington Post, Time, News Week etc.
I read lots of articles about space and science, so I guess my phone thought I would like to read the article about the darkness. So ,although I can’t remember the source , it appeared valid at first because it showed up in my “news. ”

I haven’t used the app for long. Now I know some stories are possibly wrong. (Which is disappointing. ) The headline of the article stated NASA as it’s source.

I looked it up on u-tube,and it popped right up.

The basic concept was that large amounts of hydrogen were going to be pulled from Jupiter by another planet. When the hydrogen drifted into the Sun it would cause a massive explosion, temporarily dimming the Sun to a dark blue for 14 or 15 days. It seemed far fetched, but feasible to me,if not odd. But I smelled something weird, so I asked Fluther. I figured the truth would turn up here…

For future reference, I cannot link things on my phone. @Dutchess_III was trying to walk me through the process, and we seemed to come to the conclusion that it wasn’t possible for me….

Fake news. I can’t believe people actually believe this shit.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Well. Like I said, it showed up in a place I didn’t expect to see stuff like that….

Fool me once…..
