Do you have a favourite cover version of a song?

Asked by Earthbound_Misfit (13177points) February 2nd, 2017

I’m sure this has been asked before, but I couldn’t find it.

I’m going to see Doug Parkinson tomorrow. I love his version of Dear Prudence.

Another I love is Megan Washington’s Riders on the Storm.

What cover versions of songs do you really like?

Halleujah I love Jeff Buckley’s version and also KD Langs version.

• The Nirvana cover of “Where Did you Sleep Last Night?”

The White Stripes’ cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” Also, the Miley Cyrus version.

The Civil Wars’ version of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”

• The Johnny Cash version of Nine Inche Nails’ “Hurt.”

Brian1946's avatar

@chyna

Even though he’s the one who wrote it, I prefer just about any cover of Lenny’s excellent tune to his. ;-)

Brian1946's avatar

Now that Miley has been mentioned, I really like Mira Fana’s cover of Wrecking Ball.

Johnny’s version of “Hurt” is heart-rending, whereas NIN’s version is meh.

SavoirFaire's avatar

* The Rolling Stones version of Irma Thomas’ “Time Is on My Side.”

• The Stevie Wonder version of Jeff Beck’s “Superstition.”

• Most covers of the Gloria Jones song “Tainted Love,” including both the Soft Cell version and the Shades Apart version.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

The Stevie Wonder version of Jeff Beck’s “Superstition.”

??

Isn’t that Jeff Beck’s version of Stevie’s song.

SavoirFaire's avatar

@Call_Me_Jay It’s one of those old rock dramas. They collaborated on the song together, but Beck was supposed to get the opportunity to release it first. For various reasons, Stevie’s version came out first. A lot of Beck’s fans insist that Stevie “stole” the song, which is a pretty big exaggeration. My father and I have an inside joke of calling Beck’s version a cover of Stevie’s version and Stevie’s version a cover of Beck’s.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

an inside joke of calling Beck’s version a cover of Stevie’s version and Stevie’s version a cover of Beck’s.

That sounds about right from reading the Wikipedia page. The song belongs to both.

Similar to Become the Night.

I read an interview with Patti Smith where she said she and Bruce Springsteen were recording in the same studio the same night, and they were trading ideas.

Become the Night is a Springsteen song and Become the Night is a Patti Smith song.

zenvelo's avatar

@Call_Me_Jay If you are talking about Because the Night the best cover in my opinion is by Natalie Merchant.

zenvelo's avatar

I have a double album of songs be Bob Dylan, all sung by Joan Baez. It came out almost fifty years ago, and is still one of my favorite albums.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

@zenvelo Yes, “Because the Night”, thank you, LOL I botched that.

I love Natalie Merchant and 10,000 Maniacs but Patti’s Because the Night from Easter is definitive for me.

The fact that Bruce, Patti, & the Maniacs are all associated with it is a testament to the strength of the song.

CWOTUS's avatar

I like Karmin’s cover of Look At Me Now

They do a fun version of SuperBass too.

CWOTUS's avatar

I’ve always enjoyed Georg Solti’s cover of Richard Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries in this clip.

And there are some great renderings of that old Irish folk tune, Garryowen, including the one played in the movie Little Big Man (and many other places where the US Seventh Cavalry has deployed).

“The sound of silence.” Covered by Disturbed.

Motorhead’s cover of “Enter Sandman” by Metalica [1] Original

“Psycho Chicken” by The Fools, cover/parody of “Psycho Killer” by Talking Heads [2] Original

Infected Mushroom’s cover of “Riders of the Storm” by the Doors (it’s a remix, but it counts) [3] Original

1200mg’s cover of “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits, called “Acid for Nothing” [4] Original (one of the best psytrance songs ever)

Alien Ant Farm’s cover of “Smooth Criminal” by MJ [4] Original

Judas Priest’s cover of “Paint it Black” by The Rolling Stones [6] Original

Masaki Endoh’s covers of Power Rangers and original Digimon themes [7] [8] Orig1 Orig2

Oh, and Amy Turk’s harp cover of Tocatta un Fugue and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. There is also hapr version of Waltz of the Flowers and Vltava by B. Smetana (this very cover is why I fell in love with harp).

Linda Ronstadt’s cover of Thelonius Monk’s Round Midnight

Percy Faith’s instrumental version of “Blue Moon” is the most beautifully arranged I’ve ever heard. Likewise Mel Torme’s “The Folks on the Hill” and Tom Grant’s cover of Wind, Earth, Fire’s “Fantasy.” I never get tired of listening to these.

On the other hand (ear), there are no covers—none!—better than many of Bennett’s and Sinatra’s originals.

Post-Modern Jukebox~ Style, 7 nation army, and Ice ice baby.
Disturbed~ Sound of Silence. (This one is probably my absolute favorite.)

Cruiser's avatar

Frank Marino’s cover of Johnny B Goode is pretty bad ass.

Seek's avatar

Opeth’s version of Iron Maiden’s “Remember Tomorrow”.

Also Opeth’s version of Deep Purple’s “Soldier of Fortune”.

Seek's avatar

Also, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes’ version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”

janbb's avatar

As mentioned above, Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah”
Rod Stewart “Reason to Believe”
Priscilla Herdman “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime”
Judy Collins “Who Knows Where the Time Goes”
Post Modern Jukebox “All About that Bass”

I really have trouble with other covers of “Sounds of Silence” because I grew up with S and G’s original.

Blues Brothers – Soul Man Originally by Sam & Dave

flutherother's avatar

I much preferred Matthews Southern Comfort’s version of Woodstock.

Zaku's avatar

I like Cyndi Lauper’s version of “I Drove All Night” and don’t much like Roy Orbison’s, probably because I’m not a Roy Orbison fan.

BellaB's avatar

I’m addicted to Disturbed’s take on Sounds of Silence. Í sometimes listen to it a few times a day.

I can’t find out who did the original version of Lullaby of Birdland, but Mel Torme’s version is by far my favourite. There are a lot of songs that I only want to hear with Mel’s phrasing. I’m hooked. His… pauses are… magni… ficent.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

I can’t find out who did the original version of Lullaby of Birdland

I think of it as a Sarah Vaughan song. I think she was first to record it.

According to this, George Shearing wrote the music in 1952 and “somewhat later George David Weiss added lyrics to the tune, and Sarah Vaughan recorded it in December, 1954, for Mercury with trumpeter Clifford Brown”

Richie Havens’ cover of “Just Like a Woman” is the bomb.

ucme's avatar

This is funny, I really like Manson’s cover of Tainted Love but the wife absolutely loves Soft Cell’s original & screams the place down whenever Marilyn’s version is played.

Puddles the Clown’s version of lorde’s Royals

https://www.google.com/search?q=puddles+royals&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Trust me. It’s soo good, soo bizzarre. Amazing HUGE voice.

Johnny Cash’s version of Trent Reznor’s Hurt

It still delivers the chills.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

That Royals really is good, thanks!

And I’ve seen Johnny Cash’s Hurt silence a room more than once. Yowza.

Cruiser's avatar

@SecondHandStoke Never heard of them….singer has a fab voice. I love the simplicity and imagery. Very kool!

@ucme The Soft Cell version of Tainted Love is a cover of a b side by Gloria Jones from 1965.

Cruiser's avatar

By far one of the most possessed covers of a song ever and PDG.

ucme's avatar

@filmfann I shall be sure to pass that nugget onto the wife, reaction to follow…

MrGrimm888's avatar

I have to mention “Love Song” originally by The Cure, covered AMAZINGLY by 311.
