If a person was elected President and decided that they no longer were interested in the job, how would they get out of it?

Asked by rojo (24179points) February 10th, 2017

Are there provisions in the laws? Do you have to get a doctors written excuse? Or, can you just say “This wasn’t what I expected, I am outta here” and turn the job over to the VP?
If the VP then becomes the POTUS who then becomes VP? Are they appointed or selected?

No sane, reasonable or responsible person [go ahead and insert your jokes here] would resign from the presidency of the USA in that sort of whimsical way. However, “a resignation” is what would have to happen if a president (or any other elected official) would decide that he could no longer continue in the job.

Who knows what the reasons might be? But they would certainly be better thought out than “You’re all a bunch of losers” or “I can’t stand working with turkeys” or “This sucks!” or any of the other various ridiculous suggestions might be.

“Taking too high a toll on my health”, if demonstrated in some way, might be believable and honorable.

As to “who then becomes the VP”, I’m pretty sure that is now covered in a Constitutional Amendment, at least since Nixon’s resignation made it a Constitutional issue of succession and replacement.*

*The 25th Amendment.

The president can simply resign.

The vice president moves up and that seat is vacant until the new president nominates a successor and Congress confirms the choice.

Resigning is as simple as this:

“August 9, 1974

Dear Mr. Secretary,

I hereby resign the Office of the President of the United States,

Sincerely,
Richard Nixon”

Letter of Resignation of Richard M. Nixon:

He could and would resign, but he’d never get any endorsements from any party or group if he wanted to continue to be a politician.

Resign and let the vice president take over. It has been done.

Pence won’t get us into a nuclear war and trade Russia as an ally for NATO. The theocrats are in power anyway, so that wouldn’t be any worse.
