How long does it take to receive a lost title after you've applied for it?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) February 20th, 2017

We can’t find the title to our RV and we planned to put it up at an auction on Saturday. Everything is closed today.
Can we still sell it with the title pending? How long does it take to get the title?
There are no liens on it.

In Georgia, it goes to the State Office (downtown Atlanta). and it takes 2–3 weeks for almost any piece of paper to make it through that department.

It’s impossible to know if Kansas is better or worse than Georgia.

If I were a buyer at the auction, I wouldn’t bid on something that didn’t have clear visible in your hands title. Even if you say there are no liens, the buyer (and for that matter the auction house) may not want to take your word.

Same thing happened to me on a motorcycle. Took about three weeks to get a new title.

Depends, for a car title in Texas they say 4 – 6 weeks but my experience is more like 2 – 3.

Of course, if you were are Anastasia and are trying to reclaim title to the Russian throne it may take a bit longer (and require more paperwork).

LOL!

@elbanditoroso It finally occurred to me to ask an acquaintance who is an auctioneer. He said all I need is current registration. I would think the auction house can put any caveat on the sale they want in order to protect the buyer.
However, it’s a small town. We know all the auctioneers and they know us so I don’t really think it will be a huge issue. I’ll go down and file tomorrow.

NC you can pay $75 for a lost title and sell the car to a dealer (trade-in).
A current registration is the only document required.

I think it’s, like, $20 here.

I have an update that you may find interesting.

I went to the court house to file for a lost title. My bank apparently hadn’t notified the state that the loan had been paid off, so I went to my bank and got another lien release.
At that point the courts were able to issue me a form that approves any sale, and provides the buyer with an electronic title, which is good for 30 days, until we get the title back. Then we just sign stuff over.

So relieved!

Wow. I applied at the court house on Tuesday, and it came in this morning’s mail. It’s Friday in Kansas.
