Does anyone remember this '70s commercial: "Don't take the car, you'll kill yourself"?

Asked by PupnTaco (13895points) August 15th, 2008 from iPhone

It was a PSA or an ad for a rehab clinic. At the end, a drunk man stumbles out of the house and his frantic wife screams, “Don’t take the car – you’ll kill yourself!” My sisters and I used to laugh at it, that thing was so damn funny.

I’ve looked for it online everywhere to no avail. Has anyone seen it around anywhere?

I totally remember that commercial! I remember screaming it at my brothers almost every time they left the house. My dad got really tired of hearing it. I can still picture the guy getting behind the wheel of that big old blue (I think it was blue) sedan. I wonder if it was a Southern California thing like Cal Worthington and Zachary All.

I remember Zachary All. That guy had an awesome accent.

Remember how he used to float over the suits? I loved that commercial.

I couldn’t find the commercial, but I did find T-Shirts

My brothers and uncles said that all the time! I remember that too :)

So-Cal folk may remember this “There’s Cal Worthington and his dog Spot!”. Go see Cal, go see Cal, go see Cal!

How about McGruff the Crime Dog?

I just saw Cal Worthington on TV not five minutes ago. He’s still alive!

How about Woodsy Owl? The song went “help Woodsy spread the word, never be a dirty bird, in the city or in the woods, help keep America looking good.”

sings

“In the city or on the woods, help keep America-looking good-whoot-whoot!”

Okay, now you got my wife involved on this thread. Check this out!

”...give your breath long-lasting freshness, with Big Red.”

“Be a Pepper-drink Dr. Pepper!”

“I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony.”

”...cause Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A”

“Only You can prevent forest fires.”

“How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? The world may never know.”

“Ask Mikey! He won’t eat it – he hates everything!”

“Ancient Chinese secret huh?!”

“I told two friends and they told two friends and so on and so on…”

Nice one SuperMouse! My brother Mike is two years younger, and we used to say that he was Mikey all the time! The Calgon commercial-brilliant (no chance of remake today though!).

I can’t believe two people mentioned Cal Worthington. (by the way-nice Ancient Chinese Secret reference-haven’t thought about that commercial in two decades.) I had a band in the nineties called What Street and we had a song called Normex where the first chorus climaxed in a “don’t take the care, you’ll kill yourseeeee” and the second chorus was Cal Worthington and his dog spot. Unfortunately the band is gone and the music is not on the web anywhere. I’ll post it here if I post that song somewhere. I am making bad ass jazz music now-if you want to check it out-audio and high def video please do go to http://matritvo.com. Thanks.

I have been looking for that commericial for a long time as well… Please post if you ever find it… It went like this;

Man and wife fighting in the backround as kid plays with toy car.

Guy stumbles out to the car…

“Dont take the car, You’ll kill yourself”

“During the holidays WE at sparkletts drinking water would like to remind you of one thing… a car is not a toy”

I remember it well, because my friends and I would think why only during the holidays is a car not a toy :) ... (we were young)

it can’t be lost forever, can it? :(
maybe they’re waiting for the day they plan to
re-release the commercial as a national tv spot again—not a bad idea.
sure, it may be the butt of many a joke all over again
but imagine the renewed buzz it would bring to the cause…

gone forever? say it ain’t so :(
