General Question

Can you think of any songs that start off simple, then dramatically build into a complex mess?

Asked by shadling21 (6501points) August 28th, 2008

It’s for a video project.

I was going to use Jon Brion’s song Showtime from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but I need something more rhythmic. I’m thinking strings might be a good idea.

Oh yes, and it should be instrumental.

I was going to suggest Tool, but I’m not sure that’s what you are looking for…..

queen’s bohemian rhapsody. Maybe a bit heavy for a video-project. But a classic at musical bamboozlement.

Kremlin Dusk – Utada Hikaru.
it starts really slow and mellow and lonely. then at the middle it breaks into this wild rock and roll beat and riff. turn up your volume real high, you’re in for a surprise

@cheeb- Tool may work. I don’t listen to the band much, so I wouldn’t know where to start. Is there a song that feels unsettling, then moves to all-out drama? do i even make sense when i ask that?

@Jax- Not really what I’m going for, but that is definitely the ruler (queen? teehee) of dynamic music.

@mozart- Off to find that, thanks…
EDIT: Very cool song, but it won’t work. I’ll search for the instrumental version, though…

Stairway to Heaven!

One of the songs from 28 weeks later – Don Abandons Alice – might be worth a try.

Try “Bolero” from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack; I think it might fit the bill for what you’re looking for.

Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance. That’s not instrumental, but maybe you can find a Muzak version.

I don’t know that I would say any of their songs build to a “complex mess,” but you might give Explosions in the Sky a listen. All instrumental great music.

Monarch-Butterflies & Hurricanes one of my all time favorite songs. Check out the piano part starting about 3:45ish…..amazing
Also Monarch-Save Your one of the most underrated bands.

I love Saeglopur by Sigur Ros for its simplicity, leading to a massive build up and explosion of beautiful noise. Check it out.

Savin’ Me by Nickelback
Drops of Jupiter by Train
Love’s Divine by Seal
Ordinary People by John Legend
Snow (Hey oh) by The Red Hot Chili Peppers

“Theme from Zorba the Greek” as played by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass

rockstar's avatar

@benseven I love that band. Good choice.

You could use ”The Way Up” by Super Green X.

Over 8 minutes, it gets crazy complicated!

Pachelbel’s Canon!

G’n’R’s version of Live and Let Die comes to mind…I’m sure there are instrumental versions available too.

shadling21's avatar

Hooooooookay. Thanks for the many responses. I think I’ll use that song from 28 Days Later (it has a sweet, cinematic feel) or maybe something by Sigur Ros (I completely forgot about them. Bad shadling!)

@Kay – Great song, but I’ve used it before…

@rockstar – Muse is my favourite band OF LIFE. And thanks for introducing me to Monarch!

@blast – Too techno-y, but I’m sure I’ll find a use for it in some other project. =) Thanks

Hall of the mountain king

Opus 23, composed by Edvard Grieg

It is awesome!!!!!

Bye Bye Miss American Pie (the day the music died???)
In a Gada of Eden

@shadling21 you are welcome, and yes, Muse is amazing.

ps-Sorry for the typo on my previous post. Butterflies & Hurricanes is Muse not Monarch. I should really start proofreading :(

With or with out you – U2

(one of my all time favorite ever songs)

Anything by Stravinsky. More complex and messy you will not find.

I think Happy Birthday fits the bill. When you get to the part with the person’s name, man the tension/release is just breathtaking!

shrubbery's avatar

How about Explosion by Bond?

stratman37's avatar

I didn’t know that was the name of the theme, thanx!

shadling21's avatar

@shrubbery – Oh YEAH! Thanks

shrubbery's avatar

No problem :) The one from 28 weeks later is pretty cool too.
(Here‘s a link in case people were wondering, it seems I got the name wrong, it’s “Explosive”.)

shrubbery's avatar

There’s also Sandstorm By Darude, though you did say you didn’t want too techno-y so maybe it’s not the best for this one.

shadling21's avatar

I ended up using damian‘s suggestion, Don Abandons Alice from the movie 28 Weeks Later. I can’t thank you all enough – the video would have never been completed were it not for your amazing suggestions. I was struggling so much until I found that song. Thanks, damian et al!

Bri_L's avatar

It says Mountain king but it is called In the Hall of the Mountain King by Grieg

stratman37's avatar

What about “Happy Birthday”? When it gets to the part with my name in it, it scares the crap out of me!

blastfamy's avatar

what’s your name?

shadling21's avatar

Yep. I think blast was referring to the fact that you are afraid of it in the song “Happy Birthday”. It’s gotta be one helluva name.

stratman37's avatar

No, not at all. What I meant was, when they get to the part with MY name, it clearly means that it’s MY birthday, and I’m getting older!

shadling21's avatar

Haha! Dang. Can a joke go any higher over my head? .
