Where in Brooklyn or Where in Queens?

Asked by Taurcess (2points) September 5th, 2008

I am interested in moving to New York. I prefer Brooklyn because I know it well enough. I have heard great things about Queens though, but I have never been there! So, for those who have lived in either place, still live in one of those places, or just have first hand knowledge about both places, which one is best for a family. I have two children, one is a teenager and the other is a toddler. I have mostly partied and hung out in Brooklyn, but I don’t know enough to decide where to live and raise a family. I would like a safe, affordable Brooklyn neighborhood, with a great to excellent school district, and easy access to the train. I prefer Brooklyn, but I am open to Queens. The only area I have heard about in Queens is Bay Side. We are an African American family, and I am looking for a diverse area that is family friendly/family oriented. I plan to teach in a New York public school upon completion of my Master’s of Education. I need some guidance on choosing an area, since I am not from either place. Please Help!!!!

Chech out some answers here and here,
Everyone here knows that my choice would of course be Brooklyn, but in a former life I did live in Astoria (Queens) for a short time. It’s nice too.

I lived in Flushing (Queens) in the 1950s and 60s, before turning 18. It was fun and I liked it there, but folks were kind of “distant,” I felt.
