My friends were using text messaging to instant message people through aim?

Some phones have an AIM feature built in. Not sure if that’s what you meant when you said “app” or not.

Yes mine has an app built in. (sorry I know you didn’t want that). Anyway, you could also set it up through AIM with IM Forwarding. It is like getting every IM you get automatically sent to your phone. I believe you need internet but not completely sure, and you need texting.
