What are those large red spheres sometimes found on power lines?

Asked by AstroChuck (37609points) September 9th, 2008 from iPhone

You’ve seen them, haven’t you? At first I thought that they were some kind of weight to keep the lines from flailing about, but they’re only on some lines and not others. So just what are they and what’s their purpose?

so planes, hang-gliders, etc don’t hit them. makes them more visible against the ground-scape.

Thanks. Makes perfect sense. Now if I only knew what those tennis shoes hanging on the power lines meant.

When I was a kid, I always thought they were BASKETBALLS.

Ha, I always thought they were weights too. Sacto winds and all. And that mighty tornado we had some years back. (Rolls eyes..pft.. tornado.)

Good to find out the truth. Nice question.

AC, don’t be fooled, OK?

Everyone knows that those orange spheres and the red-colored ones also, are actually UFOs that have collided with the power lines, and the resulting electricity coursing through the craft, kills all the occupants.

The US Government refuses to remove them from the power lines (leaving them right where they are) because if someone saw them actually being removed, then the government would be, in a sense, admitting that there was a need to remove them.

Take one down on your own and open it up, and you’ll see for yourself that I’m right.

I’m always right.

AC: shoes tied over power lines are a marker for drug deals.
