IPhone as MacBook modem?

Asked by Magnus (2884points) September 17th, 2008 from iPhone

I haven’t got a clear answer for this. Can I use my iphone as a 3g modem and use it’s Internet on my MacBook? Would be perfect considering this place only having dialup.
Also, I can’t pwn my iPhone atm.

It is my understanding that unless you are willing to jailbreak your phone, neither AT&T nor Apple will allow you to tether the phone. See here for an article on the matter.

As you’ll read, Apple is apparently in talks with AT&T to create a tethered option, but that does you little good now.

All that said, it is conceivable that AT&T could get testy when they see your data transfer getting kinda high.

If you find you can pwn it, here’s some info that will help with the tethering process.

sacaver nailed it above. Just to elaborate, there was briefly an app in the app store that would let you tether, called NetShare. It was pulled by apple after only a day or so. If you didn’t get it then, you’re SOL.

It’s a violation of your service contract with AT&T to do so, and there is no legitimately available software to enable it at this time.

well, the iPhone is available in many markets that DO allow tethering. Canada for one. Regardless NetShare was removed without any regard for those law-abiding users. Probably the worst part of Apple’s App Store is the way Apple keeps removing all the apps that are actually useful.
