Howdy southerners! What's your favorite country music?

Asked by Celeste00 (786points) September 22nd, 2008

I’ve been meaning to add some new tunes to listen to on my commute, and I really like country, so I thought I’d ask the experts. Also tell me where you’re from, interested in differences accross states.

I’m not from the south, but one of my favorites is Kathy Mattea.

Oh dear, I am Southern for generations (Georgia both sides), but of all genres country is among my least favorites. I see the beauty of some of the greats, but it is just not what I listen to. I love the blues, I like southern rock (Allman Brothers, for example), but not so much country. Oh, I do like Fat Bottomed Girls by Queen, which had sort of a country inspiration. I think Alan Jackson is cute. Does that count?

Me thinks you generalize in your question., BTW, there are a lot of urban cowboys out there.

@Marina didn’t mean to generalize, just found it hard in the past to find Southern people that don’t like country, or have a lot to say about it.

I’m a huge Country Music fan (well traditional country anyway). I mainly like Honkytonk and Bakersfield with a bit of Bluegrass, Cajun, Rockabilly and Old Timey. Favourite artists: George Jones, Jean Shepard, Lefty Frizzell, Buck Owens, Wanda Jackson, Merle Haggard. As for coming from the South, I guess there’s not too many people in the world that live further south than I do.

I live about an hour from Nashville Tennessee. I like old country mostly. Most country music today is “Pop Country” Todays country sucks because most country artist don’t write their own songs or have their own bands play on albums. There is a place in Nashville called Music Row where pretty much all the songwriting and studio musicians do most of what you hear on the radio.

Personally I like Johnny Cash, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Tammy Faye Starlite, Hank Williams Sr, Hank Williams Jr, Hank Williams 3. I like more of the twangy stuff with fiddles, steel guitars and stuff like that.

Here is a song by Hank Williams 3 about how todays mainstream country music sucks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEY8ARSGHTU
