Identify a song lyric or movie line about breaking up?

Asked by baseballnut (430points) October 9th, 2008

HELP! This is driving me crazy. I suspect this is part of a movie, novel or maybe even a song. It’s about a guy who is breaking up with someone for the 2nd time and this time he’s the moving party. His speech is something about breaking up, walking away and this time when he looks back over his shoulder he hopes he sees tears in her eyes. Sounds ruthless, huh? Can you help me id the source?

Let’s try and “narrow it down,” perhaps, with some questions for you to answer:

1. What year do you first recall hearing this song?

2. Is it a male only, singing or talking it? Or, is he part of a group vocal arrangement?

3. Are any NAMES mentioned in the song?

4. Can you recall ANY exact words or perhaps unusual lines from it at all, like, “ooh ee, ooh ah ah, ting tang…”

5. Could you tell the person’s age or race by his voice, based on your experience and perceptions?

The more information you can supply, regardless of how “minor” you might think it is, the easier it becomes to identify.

go ahead and say it – this is NOT a fun question! But it’s making me crazy that I can’t remember it and I want to use it as part of a training presentation. I associate this speech with The Sopranos for some reason – maybe because I’m hungry for Italian food. It’s two guys talking about one of them getting overinvolved with a woman and how he should break up, just walk away and when you do – it’d be even better if she’s crying. something like that. I think it’s a movie or book scene vs a song. Sorry but thanks for responding!

That narrows it down, considerably.

Two guys talking about breaking up.
Probably music playing as they are talking, and neither one is singing in the scene.
Possibly: Both of the men might be Italian?
Might be from some Italian-mobster type of movie or TV show?

From what you have told me, it is my guess that this isn’t any kind of “song” or anything resembling something that would be on a CD, but rather, you are seeking a particular SCENE from a TV show or movie soundtrack, that you want to record/dub, because it has a powerful message to you, and you wish to share that message as a part of your training presentation.

So, you need to write down the approximate year that you first recall having heard this scene, then compile a list of movies and TV shows were it would be reasonable to assume that this type of scene you are describing, may have occurred.

Was the scene in black & white, or color? Did you see/hear the scene in a movie theater, or at home?

I don’t think it is a book passage. I would bet a movie, from your comments.

Bri_L, for some reason I thought your answer was so cute. You sound so excited about it and I think that might be why it’s adorable. Haha.

JackAdams's avatar

So you two wanna share your thoughts on the mystery scene?

I have a hunch it might be from the movie, Goodfellas

Allie's avatar

I have no idea what it could be. I’m sorry. I can’t really help out on this one. I have a feeling Bri went to go fetch it though, or at least try to hunt it down.

Bri_L's avatar

I have not seen goodfellas

Bri_L's avatar

we could approach this two ways:

1. try to figure out the piece being talked about

2. ask questions that trigger the memory

So ask away, Amigo…

Like you pointed out, it was probably a buddy movie

I am getting the vibe it was recent like that and not an oldie.

I also got the vibe like he wanted him to break it up because he saw her as a danger to their cause.

I’m thinking it sounds like a vince vaughn line. The Breakup, Wedding Crashers, Swingers, Old School?

Although my first thought was the Lily Allen song Smile:

When you first left me I was wanting more
But you were fucking that girl next door, what ja do that for
When you first left me I didn’t know what to say
I never been on my own that way, just sat by myself all day

I was so lost back then
But with a little help from my friends
I found a light in the tunnel at the end
Now you’re calling me up on the phone
So you can have a little whine and a moan
And it’s only because you’re feeling alone

At first when I see you cry,
yeah it makes me smile, yeah it makes me smile
At worst I feel bad for a while,
but then I just smile I go ahead and smile

Whenever you see me you say that you want me back
And I tell you it don’t mean jack, no it don’t mean jack
I couldn’t stop laughing, no I just could help myself
See you messed up my mental health I was quite unwell

I was so lost back then
But with a little help from my friends
I found a light in the tunnel at the end
Now you’re calling me up on the phone
So you can have a little whine and a moan
And it’s only because you’re feeling alone

At first when I see you cry,
yeah it makes me smile, yeah it makes me smile
At worst I feel bad for a while,
but then I just smile I go ahead and smile

lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala lalalalalalalalalalala

At first when I see you cry,
yeah it makes me smile, yeah it makes my smile
At worst I feel bad for a while,
but then I just smile I go ahead and smile

You guys are the best! I’ve been traveling and unable to get back to this but I appreciate your diligence. You’ve also made me feel better about posting a not so fun question.

I really think this is a scene from a book, not a movie. I’m pretty sure I’ve read this book in the last 5 years. I favor contemporary fiction and read nearly anything since I travel so much.

I remember that the guys involved are young – likely in their 20’s and the breaker upper has been involved with the woman in question more than once. The first time she broke up with him. They got back together and this time he wants to break it off before she gets the chance. He wants to hurt her – hence the “tears in her eyes” speech.

I am headed to San Diego to deliver the training sans Sopranos scene, which I’m sure will ruin the whole thing! I will do a scan of my bookshelves this weekend and report back on what I find.

Thanks again – you all rock!

You don’t mean the song “Don’t turn around” do you?

Don’t Turn Around (Diane Warren/ Albert Hammond)
A hit for Bonnie Tyler in the 80s

If you wanna leave
I wont beg you to stay
And if you gotta go darling
Maybe its better that way
Im gonna be strong
Im gonna do fine
Dont worry about this heart of mine
Just walk out that door
Yeah see if I care
Go on and go now but
Dont turn around
Cause youre gonna see my heart breaking
Dont turn around
I dont want you seeing me cry
Just walk away
Its tearing me apart that youre leaving
Im letting you go
But I wont let you know
I wont miss your arms around me
Holding me tight
If you ever think about me
Just know that Ill be alright
Im gonna be strong
Im gonna do fine
Dont worry about this heart of mine
I know Ill survive
Sure Ill make it through
And Ill even learn to live without you
Dont turn around
Cause youre gonna see my heart breaking
Dont turn around
I dont want you seeing me cry
Just walk away
Its tearing me apart that youre leaving
Im letting you go
But I wont let you know

I wish I could scream out loud
That I love you
Wish I could say to you
Dont go dont go dont go but

Dont turn around
Cause youre gonna see my heart breaking
Dont turn around
I dont want you seeing me cry
Just walk away
Its tearing me apart that youre leaving
Im letting you go
But I wont let you know

…sorry but I can’t think of anything else, it was the only thing that rang a bell when I read the question.
