Homeowner's insurance...

Asked by nocountry2 (3689points) October 15th, 2008

Mine is up for renewal. Is it worth it to invest the time to shop around for the best one or do people just usually use the one their mortgage company provides?

I shop around. A lot of insurance agencies give discounts if you have multiple policies with them; for instance, car, life, and homeowner’s insurance.

You’ll almost certainly get a better deal if you insure your home and car with the same company.

In my experience, you might as well shop for the least. In 31 years of paying out, someone broke into our garage and stole a couple of bicycles. I called to start a claim and learned that, yes it was covered, but my premiums would increase such that I would be paying for the bicycles anyway, just indirectly over time.

Shop! You can save money. You can get more coverage for the same money. Check the ratings.
