My 2 yr old son keeps turning his head to the left and covering his right eye while watching tv. Should I be concerned?

If this is a constant, I would call the doc.

It may be just a game of tv peekabo that he is playing or something really serious. In either case, you should take him to get his eyes tested. He’s at an age where trips to the optometrist should be a once a year occurrence

Have you asked him why he is doing it? That might be a place to start. I agree with Peziak and Augustlan, if it is constant, you should probably take him to an optometrist.

Don’t just assume the worst. Talk to him. “I’m just playing peek-a-boo with elmo” is not a serious enough case to get him checked out.

That sounds a lot like what I used to to when I was a kid before I realized I needed glasses…

You might ask him if he has a hard time seeing what’s on the TV or if he can distinguish each individual leaf in a tree that’s 15 or 20 feet away (I’m suggesting you point at a tree and ask, not say “15 feet” to a 2 year old, just to clarify), or when someone he knows is a little distance away, say, “Can you tell who that is?”

If if were my little boy, I would certainly take him to his pediatrician. It can’t hurt and it sounds like behavior slightly outside the norm. An Optician (using the strange machines and patches) might scare him.

I got glasses when I was eight and was able to articulate that I couldn’t read the stuff written on the blackboard. My sister got hers at 5 because my mother was vigilant.

@aan; Do you have young children?

@gail:
Nope. I’m only 14. (Who would have guessed?) Maybe someday.

I have glasses myself, which I got in 7th grade. Until then, I could not see worth crap, which I never really understood my ailment, because I was never able to see that well as a kid and I figured that was just the normal range of vision. (Until a regular trip to the Optician)

@aan; Exactly. Better to assume vision issues than “playing peek-a-boo with Elmo.” Your tale is a cautionary one.

Yep, sounds like you should get that checked out for sure. I got my glasses at the age of two, after having problems seeing the television.

You should really have his eyes checked. At that age it could be something corrective that he will grow out of. If not, it’s better to check it now before it gets worse. Don’t want to play the guessing game when it comes to ones eyes. The sooner the better. Good luck.
