Anyone have experience with putting your iTunes library on an external drive, mainly with video?

Asked by sacaver (433points) October 19th, 2008

I am in dire need to move my growing iTunes library to an external drive. Anyone have a suggestion for a good drive? Are there any considerations for the video component of the iTunes library? My only options on my iMac are a firewire port (I think it’s 400) and a USB 2.0 port. Will an external drive lead to lagging when video is played?

I’ve had my entire video and music library on a 500Gb Western Digital “My Book” via USB2 for over a year and had no problems with video playback. I’ve even played back HD content via the drive streamed to an Xbox 360 with no lag.

Worth noting USB2 is faster than the older Firewire 400 standard so best go for that if thats the only option.
