Are there any great horror movies you would recommend for Halloween?

Asked by science_girl89 (236points) October 24th, 2008

I’m planning on staying in on Halloween (long story) and really want to know if anybody knows of any really great horror movies? I mean any movie you would recommend. All options are welcome, I don’t mind extreme gore, but would prefer a movie that is a psychological thriller.

In other words, I’m not opposed to Saw, or Halloween, or I Know What You Did Last Summer, or any other scary chase type of film. It’s just that recently that’s pretty much all I’ve seen. I really miss seeing films that are scary but more suspenseful than purely gore driven. I just don’t see the appeal of a film that is so textbook that you know exactly who’s going to be offed, in what order, and manner.

Some films I would put in the category of films I really enjoy are Signs, Alien, Predator, Rear Window, The Birds, any other Hitchcock classics. I realize that most great horror movies are really dual-genre movies. For instance Jaws could be classified as both a suspenseful horror, and adventure. I appreciate any and all suggestions!

Here are a few that spring to mind right away…..

The Exorcist
Phantasm
The Omen (the original version)
The Shining (orginal version)
Amityville Horror (original version)
Hellraiser
Halloween (original version with Jamie Lee Curtis)
Psycho (original version)
Dawn of the Dead (original version)
13 Ghosts (2001 version)
Salem’s Lot
Poltergeist (the first one)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original version)

Surprisingly, I would recommend NONE of the Nightmare on Elm Street Movies. They’re not so much scary as the hype machine fueling them.

- The Exorcist, re-release with all the extra scary crap’s good.
– Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” is pretty scary, as is “2001: A Space Odyssey”, both for different reasons.
– Evil Dead is pretty scary. Not the crap that follows it (Evil 2, Army).
– Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, again, none of the crap that follows it.

…now the following is a movie I would REALLY suggest, only if you have a solid stomach.

August Underground’s Mordum. You will probably have to order out for this one, or find some site that has it for download… you just plain won’t find it at Blockbuster, and you probably won’t find it on a store shelf somewhere, unless you have a video store that carries “Death Smut” like the Faces of Death DVDs (which I don’t recommend, Faces of Death is WAY overrated).

The Strangers

Very disturbing!

@lovelocke, “2001: A Space Odyssey” WILL put this person to sleep and any ghosts she might have in the place at the time. On a list of horror movies that this person wants, “2001” shouldn’t even be on it, not even in the “minus” column. It is NOT a Halloween movie.

@science, try “Evil Dead” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”.

Or have some fun with “Snakes on a Plane” if you haven’t seen it. Not a movie people would generally think of but a good one for Halloween nevertheless.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose? Really? I liked it (quite a bit, actually), but I wouldn’t put it on a list of scary movies. Especially not one specifically for Halloween viewing. It’s pretty much a courtroom drama with some spooky elements.

I watched the first 3 Saw films for the first time last year. I was at a friend’s place, and we were watching them in complete pitch darkness, at midnight, on his huge widescreen TV with theatre sound. Spent the majority of the night hiding behind a pillow.

@chromaBYTE I agree!

SAW movies are great…the first one I couldn’t tell if it was supposed to be bad acting or it was supposed to be funny in parts. It was ifferent tho, that why I like it. Can’t wait to see SAW V. Saw iv was a bit too hard to follow.

Anyone a HOSTEL fan? The last one was theee best.

I would recommend Takashi Miike’s Audition, or John Carpenter’s The Thing.

For a thought -provoking classic, try the original Manchurian Candidate or Hitchcock’s Vertigo.

…heh: Not 2001, but yes to Snakes on a Plane?

No, that’s fine. I’m glad they allow everyone on the internet… heh. 2001 was scary for reasons you obviously couldn’t process because there wasn’t a blood-splattered cast of teenagers or Samuel L. Jackson in it.

Not only does the OP mention he likes Sci-Fi Horror, but he also says “I realize that most great horror movies are really dual-genre movies.”... as well as quoting Hitchcock’s stand on what makes horror worth watching. There’s no other movie that fits the rubrick better than Kubrick.

Gee! And here I was worried you wouldn’t be glad they allowed me on the internet!

@Mac, R U Kidding about the Exorcism of Emily Rose?

deaddolly's avatar

I hated 2001. Bored me to tears. Think I actually left the theatre.

I recently rented it to show my daughter. It was AGONIZINGLY boring! When I first saw it years ago, just as I was about to walk out, the END CREDITS came up!

Everyone took my scary suggestions. :’(

So, I guess it doesn’t fit very well, but my friends and I have started a goofy tradition of watching The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra and Dead & Breakfast every Halloween, if you change your mind and want a laugh, I’d check them out. :)

i’m watching ‘are you scared?’ on free movies on demand. pretty good.

I thought the Hitchhiker was pretty good, and lurve to those who mentioned The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Vacancy. The Hills Have Eyes (both) are pretty bone chilling, and The Grudge (first one only) got me kinda hyped up as well. The Ring was definitely a psychological horror that had me deciphering those symbols for days…. 23 is also a good Halloween movie to catch if you’d like to see Jim Carrey in a role relatively contrasting to that of his usual characters. I didn’t find Boogeyman to be too enticing; however, When a Stranger Calls is a good one to watch if home alone, especially if you’ve ever babysitted. The Messengers was another I thought was well done. I hope some of these were helpful! Have a Happy Halloween! :)

The Ring, ring 2, final destination, and sixth sense.

For the purposes of good, reckless 1980’s fun (some of these are really gory, so keep that in mind), you can’t go wrong with: Class of Nuke ‘Em High (1985), Creepshow (1982), From Beyond (1986), Brain Damage (1988), Bad Taste (1987), Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988). For something classier, try: Roman Polanski’s Repulsion and Rosemary’s Baby, Brian De Palma’s Carrie and Sisters, Cronenberg’s The Fly and The Dead Zone, Joe Dante’s The Howling or the Gremlins films, John Carpenter’s Halloween and The Fly, The Changeling, Poltergeist, Fright Night, Misery, The Silence of the Lambs, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Sleepy Hollow (1999). For something in between, can’t go wrong with the 1970’s and early 80’s: Deathdream (1972), Suspiria (1977), Piranha (1978), Phantasm (1979), An American Werewolf in London (1981), Videodrome (1982), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), The Return of the Living Dead (1985).
