What are some good multiplayer games for the iPhone?

is there any fun multiplayer games ( hopefully free) for the iphone. Local or wifi

Well, most “multiplayer games” are going to be on a single unit… I don’t believe ipods or iphones can interface 1:1 with each other.
That said, the iGolf, iBowl are pretty snazzy. They require you to “handle” the ipod in a way that you would swing a club or roll a ball… similar to the Wii Sports lineup.
There are various makes of Chess/Checkers and so on… also good.
I’m still waiting for all of the popular board games to make their appearance. Monopoly on the iPod would be totally boss when waiting in a long line somewhere.

It was the #1 app on the free Top 25 for awhile, and at this time of writing is #3 and has an average of 4 stars. You can play two players on the same iPhone, and it’s pretty fun. There is also the possibility of playing with someone else through wifi. I tried it with a friend, but we were at a bar and using the EDGE network, and it didn’t work. So I guess you need wifi. Fun game!
