What is a good brand of makeup that keeps?

Asked by EmpressPixie (14760points) October 27th, 2008

I only use makeup once or twice a year at best. I have a bag of stuff from high school and maybe even middle school. What is a good brand for me to restock with that I can keep for a long, long time without needing to replace it? How long are these things good for? Ideally, I’d like to hear about something that I can keep more or less forever and still have it be good/healthy to use. I don’t mind buying the expensive-ish stuff (what I have is Clinique) as long as I won’t have to replace it often.

It doesn’t exist. Once opened all makeup has a point at which it becomes hazardous to use… particulary anything that would go near your eyes should be avoided after three months unless it is powder shadow. At that point it’s probably beginning to dry out and bacteria and microbes may have gotten in.

If you don’t use makeup that often I would buy the cheap stuff and never splurge on the high end brands. That’s for us addicts who will us it up before that time comes. It will inevitably end up costing you much more for very little benefit. I assume you don’t have too many problem areas or you’d use it more often but the one thing I splurge on is concealer. A good concealer is better than anything else in your collection by far. Well besides Urban Decay’s Primer Potion.

So not the answer I wanted to hear, but thanks! I was really hoping something would have been figured out by now.

I would recommend you trying some of those mineral foundations (like Loreal Bare Natural). I love these products, and they probably have a longer shelf life than liquids, but as Asmonet said, I wouldn’t keep anything longer than about a half a year, tops.

Even powder foundation shouldn’t be kept for more than six months if you’re being safe. 9–12 months I’m sure would be feasible but if you did that I would hope you are regularly sanitizing the makeup sponges/pads that came with the product or replacing them entirely. Your skin’s surface has bacteria that can grow in that environment, not much but enough that it’s not worth the risk as I stated earlier.

Like I said, regular pharmacy supplied make-up should be fin for her purposes, and pixie, I know it’s not what you wanted to hear, I almost felt bad answering, hehe. But, as long as you’re not like me and running through the stuff you probably won’t even notice the difference. Except in your budget. Besides I mix and match the pricier brands with the drugstor kind because a lot of it is really decent and pretty good quality overall.

If you’re curious I use cover girl true blend foundation, maybelline full and soft mascara and minral concealer, cover girl powders, and revlon eyeliners, brushes and eyeliner quads on the cheap end. I’ve tried everything the drugstore has ever stocked, and these are by far superior to the rest in my opinion. The revlon brushes are only about seven dollars and you will notice a major difference in how your eyeshadow looks when compared to using the sponges that are provided. You will really only ever need a flat contour brush and a round eyeshadow brush, they will work for you in any situation.

See how much more helpful I can be hen I’m not on a phone at work? :P

You shouldn’t keep make-up for more than 6 months – however, if you’re looking for a good brand that doesn’t break the bank, I’d recommend Max Factor. If price isn’t a concern, Dior all the way!

Nonono, I’m very appreciative that you did answer! But no one likes hearing they’ll need all new product every time they use it.

Max Factor makes reminds me of rapists. I know it shouldn’t really, but it does.

@pixie: Yeah, I figured, turth hurts. You don’t want to lose an eye for the sake of beauty because it was carrying some sort of pathogen. :’’’’’( Then how cute could you be?

What about a good organic brand? I am terrified of foundation (currently use concealer and powder) because I’m afraid it will make my skin break out…but now I’m getting older (28) and am looking for more of a flawless look when I go out…any suggestions?

@nocountry: If you’re getting older, and kiddo, you’re still young, a foundation primer paired with a foundation is best, you will look gorgeous. Splurge on primers. No matter their purpose, it’s worth it.

As long as you wash your face before putting anything on and when you get home or are done for the day you should be fine. Look for non-comedogenic products, they might help set aside some worries. However for my skin it really hasn’t made that much of a difference.

In my experience organic brands are harder to work with, and tend to be more expensive. I don’t think it’s worth it.

Like I said, I went through a serious phase.

Hmmm, this is very helpful. I had no idea “foundation primers” even existed…to the mall!

Any make up questions, you see me. :)

Get this while you’re there. I cannot stress enough how awesome it is. It’s one of those products that have a rabid cult following and you either ‘get it’ or you don’t. Try it once. Just trust me.

as a devout make up whore, the best foundation I’ve ever used is by Origins. Best coverage, lightest feeling, nicest fragrance and organic.

I’ve been addicted to make up since I was a teenager. I have tried it all.
I love MAC, but a cheaper and better make up is NYX. Available online.
Urban Decay is good, as is Stilla. NYX is affordable tho. Origins has great primer and moisturzer and well worth the price. Have fun!
