It’s like asking who is the best painter or filmmaker.

It’s a purely subjective question.

But I have to say Slash. He is the biggest influence on my guitar playing.

Alive but less active: Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton
Dead: Jimmi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn

In the 70s I have a live album featuring Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton on stage together (kind of a Yard Birds reunion/celebration). I remember it being awesome.

I need to track it down to see if memory serves.

I’d definitely put John Petrucci near #1.

As an aside, I would like to note that I was at Stevie Ray’s last performance. I was at Alpine Valley that night in August 1990. It was an electric performance that closed the night with SRV and Clapton on stage with Robert Cray and Jimmy Vaughan. I still feel sad when I think back to that night. Two of the worlds greatest guitarists on stage at the same time….

The best in my opinion, because I love his goal: To play a regular old guitar and make completely new and interesting sounds and music.

Honestly, I feel like a freak because Hendrix just bores me.
