Remote Browser?

Asked by aanuszek1 (2290points) October 28th, 2008

A year ago, a teacher was bragging to me about a web browser he had, which let him view any web page using the extremely overly filtered school internet connection. He explained it as working by connecting to the site by first going through a site in china or something like that. What is the name of a program like this and can anyone recommend one to me? Even better, a portable one.

I would google “proxy server” and see where that takes you.

I understand the proxy server, but I’m looking for a browser that will automatically connect through one.

Google “OperaTor” It’s a portable version of Opera, and I think it has a proxy service automatically built in.

Why don’t you save your nefarious surfing for at home? It saves the techs and admins a lot of headache.
Also, China filters a lot of the internet. Have you heard about the Great Firewall of China?

It’s not like I’m watching porn at school or anything. However, I would like to be able to check Gizmodo, Email, some webcomics, as well as some other sites blocked by the filter.

You should be able to mask your web surfing with Tor, which there is a Firefox plugin for.

Tor is an “onion router” that works by repeatedly encrypting and sending packets across the internet. Each layer in the onion decrypts the message to uncover the next routing instruction, until the packet reaches its destination. This prevents the intermediary nodes from knowing the origin, destination, and contents of the packets.

So I did make a good choice! Opera Tor Is a portable version of Opera with Tor built right in. It satisfies both the proxies browser and portable needs.

Opera Tor is just as good as the Firefox plugin, if you prefer Opera.

Of course, you don’t even need to use a special browser (though FirefoxPortable together with the TorButton extension work wonders) – you can also use sites like Anonymouse or HideMyAss.

They fetch the webpage to their own server (without the filter) and then you can visit the page on their server.

Be careful when entering passwods when using such proxy servers though, as all your data, including passwods, pass through them.

I completely forgot about firefox portable, although I use it all the time. I guess I just take it for granted.
