What do you associate with the holiday season?

Asked by irondavy (727points) November 1st, 2008

The holidays can be a tumultuous time for everyone. Lots of gatherings with people you maybe never want to see again or long to see again. Are there any memories, feelings, stories, people or anything else that you’re reminded of during these months?

lots and lots of chocolate. i always get chanukah gelt. i get it with every gift, and 8 nights of gifts with 3 gifts on average a nigh from family and friends means 24 bags of gelt a season, give or take 6 bags. i also used to get calendars that had a chocolate for every day in december. i dont think i ever made it past the 3rd without eating it all.

People who love each other spending too much time together.

Loads of stress, sadly. Shopping, debt, obligations, etc. The only things I really enjoy about it is wrapping presents and seeing my kids excited.

last year my 22 yr old son actually said that since we are always so good ourselves and each other throughout the year ‘why is this so special’.... got to love that..
anticlimactic in the worlds eye ( and my 12 yr old son ) but cathartic non the less

I enjoy them through my daughter. If it wasn’t for her, I might choose to sleep through them.

Admittedly, I do enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner. We had 23 people last year – it was a blast.

Come to think of it, we started a new tradition 2 years ago of going out for brunch fir Christmas, so that’s not so bad either.

Colored lights
The radio station that plays a month of Christmas songs
The aroma of spices and fir trees
Peppermint candy canes
Soft flannel pajamas
And the pagan within loves the winter solstice because the days will soon get longer

Cookies. I love baking cookies. I started the planning last week.

Did someone say cookies?

@AlfredaPrufrock: Would they be chocolate chip? If so, and you here a knock on your door…don’t be alarmed.

I LOVED holidays at my grandparents house as a kid. Now it’s not so great. After my Grandfather passed away, things got a little colder. I hope that someday my husband and I ;) can provide the same kind of wonderful times for our family. The great full tummy, fire crackling in the fireplace, Nat King Cole on the HI-FI, mid century cheesy decorations, family love euphoria that I have such fond memories of. It really doesn’t get any better than that.

Oh yeah, and my Dad always gets my mom and I a giant box of See’s Candies. I wait all year for that.

Family’s always the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of the holidays. Getting stuff runs a tight 2nd.
