Why would you want to? Study
Every time I’ve been there, the shores were littered with dead fish and birds…I’d advise you to stay far, far away.

…..and the smell!!! It is also cold in the low desert this time of year. I suggest camping at the hot springs off the 111 not far from there ( wish I could remember the name for you).

I watched the documentary, “Plagues and Pleasures on the Salton Sea,” narrated by John Waters, and it looked like the creepiest, most disgusting place ever. Maybe you’re filming a postapocalyptic thriller?

Here’s the REAL scoop on the Salton Sea coming from a person who lives within 1/2 mile of the Sea. This is the beginning of what we call our “heaven” time of year. It’s beautiful and the weather will stay in the 70–80 degree range until next spring. The Plagues movie was highly slanted towards the outrageous side of life at the Sea. As for a smell, perhaps once or twice during the year we might have an odor for several days due to an algae bloom which is caused by heavy winds. The algae bloom is localized and within the bloom area, oxygen is depleted which causes a localized fish die off. Here iin North Shore we have the Salton Sea State Park with a great visitor center. If you are more of an off-road camper, just up the hill a mile is the greatest desert camping areas ever! Fishing for tilapia is great from the beach and YES, they are safe to eat. I’ve lived here for 25 years and was a camper for 15 before that. It is the best place in the world!

Hahaha! You’re a representative from the Salton Sea Tourism Board, aren’t you? :)

Why would you say that? Must be the name.

The New River empties into the Salton Sea. The city of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico dumps raw sewage and industrial waste into the New River, which then flows north into the United States and terminates at the Salton Sea.

If you decided to ignore the previous article I posted, you will probably ignore this one as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_River_(Mexico-United_States)

That algae bloom ain’t caused by “heavy winds,” people. What a sick joke.

From 1905 to right around 1950, the Salton Sea was ok.

25 years ago, the Salton Sea was a sewer.

I, too have lived nearby, and I wouldn’t touch it with a mile-long pole.

I sure as hell wouldn’t eat any of the fish that live in it.

I didn’t know it was such a shit hole. Thanks, I think you’ve saved me a 3 hours drive.
