As I age and dispossess myself of too many possessions, too many shoes, too many knick-knacks, too many sets of china, I feel I have more. Free at last.

Yes. Owning stuff is fine but don’t let your stuff own you.

You get to know yourself better when you have less possessions distracting you from figuring out who you are.

(IMO, of course)

(and much less dusting, also. EL, it is a universal truth you cite.)

With regard to design and engineering, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry once notably said, “Il semble que la perfection soit atteinte non quand il n’y a plus rien à ajouter, mais quand il n’y a plus rien à retrancher.” Which is to say in English, “It appears that perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

With regard to my own life, I often wish I had fewer possessions. If only I could bring myself to throw some things away.

My sister is very materialistic. 4000 sq feet of stuff. My stuff fits in the back of a 87 Volvo wagon.

I have stuffed all my crap in a backpack and left when I was younger. (Needed to find myself) I didn’t find myself, but I slept under an overpass for a few months.

With all of this said, Be sure to buy up those fluther shirts! One for you, one for a friend, one for the dog! They make a great gift and with the holidays on the way they are just what you’re looking for!

You work through your twenties and thirties to amass all of the things you think will make you happy. I will be forty next year, and we have attained most of the things we thought we should have. I am beginning to realize how hard taking care of all of this stuff is. Going to be when I am older. I am beginning to appreciate that less is more ad you get older. I confess to being a horrible pack rat, but I am working through this. As long as I have my family and my health, I am happy.

Just finished a huge purge! I was an obsessive collector for years. My decorating preferences have become somewhat minimalist and very little of it made its way into the house. In my case the stuff did own me! We actually rented a shop building to house these things and have moved some of it probably four times! Since my husband had to take a job 2000 miles away, I decided now was the time. Before he left last week,(sniff) we had a four day garage sale, it was a huge amount of work and totally worth it. During the sale, people kept asking me if I had an antique store. When I would say no, they would stare in disbelief and say “Where did you get all this stuff?”.I decided to be ruthless, and only kept heirlooms, beloved treasures and what would fit neatly into containers in the garage. It is a great feeling. I still have more than I need, three computers(one in each of our offices and my laptop) in a house all by myself is a bit ridiculous. STUFF does not make you happy and in my case actually became a huge burden. I wish the money I spent on all that crap was in a retirement account. Now I see things the catch my eye and I have a whole thought process that I make myself use. “Do I already have a similar item that is functional and serving its purpose? If the answer is no, then I ask myself, “Do I really NEED this item?”. Almost always, the answer is no.

@Soap; I bequeath to you six white spaces for breaks in your text. Good answer but too hard to read.
