How do you use hair conditioner?

Asked by Magnus (2884points) November 13th, 2008 from iPhone

Used it at a friends house without knowing and it left my hair mighty fiiine. Now first I thought it was shampoo so I used it that way.

How are you really supposed to use conditioner? Do I leave it in or wash it out, do I apply it before or after shampoo?

In the beginning, people washed their hair with soap. However, soap doesn’t do well with the wide variety of hard and soft water that occurs all over the world, so people invented shampoo, which is a detergent. It does well in all kinds of water, but the downside is that it strips your hair of all the good oils that protect it. So, people invented conditioner to replace the stuff their shampoo takes out.

As such, it’s best to use it after the shampoo, or the shampoo will just wash all that right back out, rendering the conditioner useless.

Most conditioner is meant to be left on for a few minutes and then rinsed out with water. There are a few that are meant to be left in, though, so it pays to read the bottle so you know what you’re getting into.

Also keep in mind what type of hair you have to begin with: If it’s very dry, leaving it in (as long as you don’t use massive amounts) would be no problem for you.

If you have oily hair, use conditioner, but rinse it out.

i don’t use conditioner. here’s why.

basically shampoo is a detergent that, along with removing dirt and nasties, removes a lot of the natural oils from your scalp, which are needed to keep your hair healthy. so since all of those natural oils are removed by the shampoo, conditioner was created to “replace” those oils. however, the oils in the conditioner aren’t an exact match for the natural oils that your body creates.

basically conditioner is used after shampooing to make your hair soft and shiny again.

i just skip the whole washing process and let my hair take care of itself. i do use natural rinse washes, though. just for days when my hair is super dirty or sweaty and whatnot.
