Ties with polo shirts?

Asked by blastfamy (2174points) November 16th, 2008

Everytime I wear a tie, I wear it with a button-down shirt. I’ve never questioned this: I’ve never seen someone wearing a tie with anything but a button-down.

Is there some unspoken rule against wearing ties with polo shirts, or is this something that is considered ‘OK, but undone’?

A polo shirt is considered casual wear so why would you wear a tie with it? You wouldn’t wear on with a tee-shirt, right. I think it would be akin to wearing dress shoes with walking shorts. I don’t know about any hard and fast rule against it, though.

Astro is right, it is a casual v dressup thing.
But hey, if you want to make a fashion statement and start a trend, go for it!!

I’m pretty sure that wearing a tie with a polo shirt is blastfamy.

Have to totally agree with SuperMouse. Just seems like a bad idea. But I certainly don’t want to be the one to quash your individualism.

The collar on a polo shirt isn’t built for a tie.

Don’t go bashing the polo shirt! I love them : )

I seem to remember some 80s singer (Rick Springfield?) wearing a loosely tied tie with a polo…as with every other 80s trend, we may see it again…<cringe>

I’m sorry – I laughed out loud when I read this. The image is funny. Wouldn’t it be like wearing pantyhose and heels with sweats? hehe.

Members Only jackets, oversized shirts, and leg warmers came back. Stranger things have happened…not that that’s a good thing.

Maybe a knit tie with a polo?? Trying to envision this…

Okay, not sooo bad… This and this. The knit-tie-with-knit-shirt thing was not off.

I’m all about ‘do whatever’ but that just doesn’t look good on any level.

I am in the camp that says get rid of ties altogether. I like the open neck look on guys. A little chest hair, maybe a shot of the t-shirt. The only time I like a tie is at formal affairs and when guys are wearing classic suits. No to ties with sport jackets.

Only if you also wear sandals with socks at the same time.

@RandomMrAdam, yucky…

@RandomMrAdam, LOL. I also believe the collars on most polo shirts aren’t made to hold a tie. Personal opinion: NO

In the movie Grandmas boy; the main character, wears a tie and a polo shirt to his cousins wedding. But yes the motif behind his character is a pot smoking 35 video game developer who ends up being forced to stay with his grandma so…
