Anyone ever had a 'dry socket'?

Asked by jsc3791 (1988points) November 24th, 2008

My dad recently had several teeth pulled. Being a smoker, and stubborn, he now has a dry socket and an infection.

What is good to eat while this heals? Any general tips for healing dry socket?

I realize this could be Googled, but I’d like to hear from some of you who may have had it or cared for someone who did.

Thanks!

All I have to say is that I hope he feels better soon. Dry sockets are supposed to be exceutiatingly painfull.

Clove oil on a thin strip of gauze is what my doc did for me when I got one. Instant relief! As far as eating goes, anything is ok, as long as it does not require slurping or sucking. Tell your dad I feel for him…it was very painful!

Some of the worst pain in my life was associated with dry sockets. I wanted to cut my head off. The only way to heal it is to pack the holes and you typically have an oral surgeon do it. They will give him pain killers too.

Now that I think about it the stuff they put on the gauze did taste like cloves.

If I recall correctly, I had one post-wisdom teeth extraction. But to be honest, I don’t remember much of, oh, anything from then. Drugs. Lots of them. Possibly more than necessary.

I have not had one, but traveled with a friend who developed one while with me. Very painful. I would recommend following doctor’s orders and taking pain meds as needed.

You can get it at a drug store.
