Can you help me find the quote?

Asked by wildflower (11172points) November 27th, 2008

I’m looking for a quote that goes something like: “Nothing is as common as the need to be extraordinary”
I’m pretty sure it was a quote by a well-known personality, but right now it escapes me and google is not being very helpful…...
Does this ring a bell with you? Do you know the quote, the name of the person it came from and possible a source?

I found this

“Nothing is so common-place as to wish to be remarkable”, by William Shakespeare.

A lot of the Google sites attribute the quote to Shakespeare but I think it was really said by Oliver Wendell Holmes. The language sounds much too modern for the Bard. And there are no attributions; no plays nor sonnets cited as the source. That makes me suspicious..

Nothing is so common-place as to wish to be remarkable.
Oliver Wendell Holmes
