What is a good website to find out about HD quality video projectors?

Asked by meemorize (324points) November 29th, 2008

I consider buying a video projector in the near future but have not owned a TV in the last 3 years and no projector ever so I am a little bit out of my element here.

Any links and hints and tips will be much appreciated.

Budget = the cheaper the better. Not more than roughly $2500ish.
Quality wise, i think i wont need full HD (1080i) 720i will be enough (in case that matters at all).

Thanks for reading.

cnet is a good electronics site that will give you honest evaluations. I read Sound & Vision magazine and they probably have a site.

720p is the “entry level” HD format (p for progressive). I will add that that format is losing ground in the format wars (some network stations broadcast only in 720p, but most are gravitating toward 1080i/p). Blu-Ray is 1080p, and is dictating the direction of the format for the next year or so…if you’re concerned about future proofing your projector, you may want to take that into consideration;

Also, make sure that when you do your research you read up on maintenance costs, especially with bulbs; the prices really vary for bulbs; surprisingly you don’t need a super-high lumen count if you are going to be viewing in a semi-dark room; rooms that get a lot of sunlight require higher lumen counts (2500 or more). Also, the screen you choose will have an effect on the picture quality (beaded glass types are ideal, but also it depends on your viewing environment).

Good luck with that.

Retrevo and Home Theater Magazine are good sources for reviews and the latest pricing. CNET is good as well.
