Four hour layover in NYC. Any suggestions on what to do/eat [vegan] for that time?

Asked by lunabean (630points) December 6th, 2008

I’m riding a train and the thing that sucks is that I have to keep my bags with me since the station I’m leaving from will be closed when I leave. If there’s a place to keep my bags in Penn Station then at least I can go out into the city for a bit.

@lunabean: I’ve been to Penn Station countless times, and have never seen anyplace like that to leave bags.

if you don’t have too much luggage you can take a subway or taxi to the village and hang out there. you can probably find a million places to suit your needs in the village. try to travel light!!

No, i’m pretty sure they removed any remaining lockers years ago.

Maybe try this place

311 W 48th St

It’s a bit of a hike with luggage, but it would be a cheap cab ride.

i don’t know what kind of traveling you’re doing (business, etc) but maybe you can mail some stuff ahead so you don’t have to carry it with you. that will lighten your load for traveling day.

In New York City many restaurants follow the Kosher Dietary Laws which preclude the mixing of meat and dairy at the same meal. The immediate area around Penn Station is the Garment District and the Fur District, both industries employ a good number of Jewish people. Consequently, there are some restaurants that serve only dairy and vegetable products.

This site may be somewhat out of date but there are several vegetarian and dairy listings in the immediate area of Penn Station in Manhattan.

I would check each hyperlink or call to make sure that the establishment is still in business and is still serving the same style cuisine.

Take a cab (with your luggage) to the Museum of Modern Art. Check your bag and coat at the Museum. Eat, look at art, wander, breathe.

Just be careful if you’re taking a cab – there has been some mad crazy traffic, and the last thing you want to do is miss your train. You’ll be at 31st -33rd street, 7th-8th ave, so don’t stray too, too far from there (i.e., the MOMA is 53rd St, between 5th and 6th Ave, which is a little bit of a hike/cab ride, but don’t try to get to the Met, which is up around 86th st; there just isn’t time). NYC is especially busy now because it’s the holidays, so just be very, very time conscious.

Tits makes an excellent point (lmao)... what may seem like it should take 5 minutes could take 40. Really, you shouldn’t go further than you could reasonably walk if you had to. My personal suggestion is to get something to eat close by, and get yourself a good book. NYC is super unpredictable on a regular day, but you throw Christmas into that while you’re in the heart of Midtown, and you could really be in a pickle.

you’re definitely going to be running into crowds and crowds of people.
