Why does my Linksys router stop working after 20-40 minutes?

Asked by JohnRobert (490points) December 7th, 2008

I have a Linksys wireless router connecting my PC to my high speed cable. If I don’t use the router, and connect directly to cable, everything works fine. However, when I use the router, it works for about 20–40 minutes and then lose the connection. I have to unplug the power to the router, then plug back in. Once I plug back in, it resets itself and I’m back online until the next 20–40 minute span of time.

I tried the online help at Linksys, but that doesn’t address this issue.

This happens all the time with me too. I think it has something to do with the hardware, or a wire is rusted or not connected right. try to keep your router in a certain position so that the wires are connected right. or just buy a new router.

I had this problem…replaced routers modems wiring in my home….everything. Comcast decided it was a problem at the pole… They will fix it asap… As in it’s 7 months later and they are still supposed to be coming…

Do you have the latest firmware? I find that sooooo many router problems are solved by updating firmware. You normally can see the latest version on the linksys site and your current version is on the home screen of the router’s control panel.

I’ll try the firmware update. If that doesn’t work, I’ll stick a fan on it to see if it is the overheating issue. It is now out in the open, as I need to frequently unplug and plug back in as part of my internet experience.

Might just be a bad router.

i remember reading something about a problem with linksys routers. just get a new one (non-linksys). it will save you time and effort.

A lot of people have no problem with Linksys routers. There are always one or two issues with bits of computer hardware by all manufacturers. Firmware upgrade should fix it, and I for one have used various Linksys routers for a long time with no problem.

i replaced my linnksys router with a netgear one then after it still did the same thing i had comcast install their router/modem combo (linksys again) and it still messes up

I haven’t been able to fix it, so I’ve just disconnected it. skabeeb, when I used to have Cox cable at another place, they were able to acutally test the signal strength from the wall jack and figured out that there was a bad connection outside the building. sorry to hear your having such results with them. One other thing, the first couple times the cable company sent subcontractors. Only when they sent a specialist that was one of thier employees did the problem get fixed. Next time you call them, let them know that you want a specialist and not a subcontractor.
