Should I give my landlady a holiday gift?

Asked by EmpressPixie (14760points) December 9th, 2008

My landlady is awesome and I love my apartment. She rents it definitely cheaper than she could for the area, it’s big and well lit, and she’s super friendly. I see her out and about sometimes (she lives next door) and she’s always nice. They are super generous with the heat. She worked with me when I moved in (she was going to have to repaint anyway, so she let me choose the color), let me start moving in half a month early because the previous tenant had already cleared out, is generally a good landlady.

Would it be weird to give her something like a batch of cookies or some chocolates because it is the holiday? Her family owns the block of apartments, so she’s not just the manager (if that makes a difference).

I don’t know if it is appropriate or not, but she’s a great landlady, the apartment is great, I’d enjoy showing some appreciation.

This question inspired by an article on Consumerist that has lots of people giving their bad experiences with landlords. Makes me realize I’m quite lucky to have a good one.

Sure! Go ahead and give her something. There’s nothing inappropriate or weird about it. A box of chocolates saying “Thank you for being a great landlady” would only be appreciated. You are lucky to have a good landlady, I have heard many horror stories from some tenant friends. My landlady last year was awesome though! After I won her over by helping her with some computer work :)

As a landlady myself, cookies are always appreciated ;-)

@EP I would absolutely do something for her….It doesn’t have to be a big huge thing.

A poinsettia?

Homemade baked goods?

Some foodie item? (coffee, tea, a basket of cheeses, etc)

Yes! You should do it, no matter how small the token. A good landlady is a gem!!

Mine is really fair and fixes things right away, so I always try and give her something. In the past I’ve gotten her retro holiday candy or forest-scented candles, a good bottle of wine, or a small christmas tree made out of rosemary. She’s also a grandma – so one year I got her a big tin of gourmet hot chocolate, hand-crafted marshmallows, and a Christmas movie for a ‘night in’ with the kiddos.

She always seems really grateful, and I think I’m one of her only tenants who acknowledges her.

@figbash just curious. what are hand crafted marshmallows?

@snoopy: They’re made in small batches, then put out and hand-cut, as opposed to machine-processed like the kind you find in regular stores. I’ve gotten mine from Whole Foods, but here’s another link to Williams Sonoma’s description.

They’re neat, but some people prefer the old-school, commercial kind. You can also get the handcrafted types in different flavors, and in star, snowflake, and snowman shapes. They’re just kind of a fun, luxury : )

Thanks figbash! Who knew?

I’m a landlady, and I would like to put in my vote for excellent presents for
landladies everywhere. I’ll even submit the thought that if you had a
medium-good landlady and gave her a slew of cookies, she might turn into
a very-good one like the empress’s.

As a landlady, I would love it! I only own one rental property, and it is right next door. I have given my good tenants cookies on several occassions! It goes both ways…we really appreciate good tenants : )

I think that is a lovely idea EP. She sounds like a very nice person, and treats you more than just a body in a space that she owns. Why shouldn’t you give her something to show your appreciation?

I think it would be a great idea to give her something too.
