Why they put flouride in tap water?

Isn’t it poison if swallowed like it says on your toothpaste tube?

Basically, it helps prevent cavities without having too much of a negative effect. The Wikipedia article provides more insight as to how this came to be. It’s only really dangerous if you ingest large quantities, and thus more dangerous to children consuming the same quantity. But we’re talking eating a good amount of the tube of toothpaste. The amount in water is not really enough to be poisonous to people.

It’s not in a high enough concentration to damage anything. It’s like whole grains if you eat enough of them you get, well, “stopped up”. Your not going to get too much of it unless you take A LOT of the stuff. Plus it’s really diluted and can help your teeth, a la toothpaste.

It’s not a problem. It has been in our city water for years. I am on a well now and would much prefer city water.

Lotsa Europeans on Fluther (night time there right now, though). Be interesting to hear their opinions since many European countries ban fluoride from drinking water.

It is safe in low doses. It helps fight cavities. Not all communities add fluoride. I filter my water anyway so it is not an issue for me.

I believe it’s in there to help provide the greater population, especially children, who cannot afford to visit the dentist, get the flouride they need for better dental health.

It’s a commie plot!

Lightlyseared's avatar

@gooch how do you filter the flouride out of the water?

madcapper's avatar

why they make wheel?

gooch's avatar

@lightlyseared I have a reverse osmosis filter but I would think Brita filters would work too.

Lightlyseared's avatar

@ gooch Brita filters don’t, at least according to their website. An RO does the trick but aren’t they a bit pricey?

gooch's avatar

Yes they are pricey but so worth it I try to keep my intake of chemicals low. I think water quality is very closly related to a persons health.

Wow man that’s a heavy question…...the real answer would probably just get dismissed as conspiracy theory, but search the web or youtube and there is plenty of info that shows it does nothing to prevent cavities and everything to damage your brain…....

speaking of toothpaste why are there growth hormones in there?

Is all this stuff related? (yes)

Simply put, our water is VERY bad. No one wants to talk about it and as long as it comes out of your faucet no one really cares.

Either drink your water and die from the many, poisons, viruses and bugs that are in it.
Or, dump a bunch of chemicals in it, playing it off as good and safe for you. Preventing that nastiness from getting you.

We drink so much water and due to the size of our population, filtration on a massive scale is VERY expensive. So they play it down, toss some bleach and fluoride into it.
Move on to other things. By the time you get sick from it it will be blamed on something else.

@ChazMaz, fluoride does nothing to help “clean” the water. Not a thing.

CMaz's avatar

That is is right! But it makes for good smoke and mirrors.
