What makes you sad?

Asked by oasis (980points) December 13th, 2008

I recently visited an Ape sanctuary for abused and ex Circus animals.
When i looked into the eyes of an ageing Silver Backed Gorrilla the feeling of sadness was overwhelming.
This once proud KING reduced to a scared and nervous wreck, staring right back at me, his eyes seemed to say why have you done this to me.
The feelings of humiliation and guilt that became apparent after looking into this KINGS eyes will be etched in my memory.
Have you ever felt sad about what we as “humans“have done to this planets creatures.

I feel really sad when I see little children out in public who are being jerked along or spanked for crying by parents who are trying to make them behave in adult situations, when all the child wants to do is go home.

I agree with that also, the parent taking their dailly frustration out on a child who probably idolises them.
I saw the same thing last week.(get involved?wouldn’t you just like to)

as far as animals, in reference to the specific question, i feel bad for the polar bears that are struggling to hunt in a world increasingly without ice. i feel bad for the deer in my area and other rural areas where every spare piece of woodland is having a house or development put on it, forcing the deer onto the roads and interacting with humans. where i live, the other day a black bear got hit by three cars. the bears were here before the humans were, but now look what happens. i feel bad for stray cats who live in any area, especially in the winter. i especially feel bad for stray cats who live in urban areas, where people throw things at them and it’s harder for them to be fed by people. i feel bad for stray cats who used to be owned by someone who moved, and left the cat behind. i feel bad for dogs that are owned by people who keep the dog in a crate all day while they’re at work. that’s not fun for the dog, i don’t think. i feel bad for elephants getting shot just to have their tusks cut off.

i also feel bad for dogs being bred in puppy mills. i feel bad for animals bred for their fur, who live in fur farms. i feel bad for cows, chickens and pigs who are raised in overcrowded conditions and slaughtered cruelly. and last but not least, i feel bad for pit bulls who are made to fight.

I was in Disneyland with my grand son last week. I felt sad because I saw miserable children who were cranky, and parents on edge about it, and it was obvious the poor kids missed their nap time.
I took 3 days at Disneyland with my grand son and still didn’t see a lot because 3–4 hours out of each day was spent going home for nap time. I am sure that he had way more fun than those poor kids who were crying and being bratty just because they were tired and off their routine.
I should say, that I wish I had figured this out when my kids were little. Then, I was so focused on making sure they saw everything that we saw everything and did everything I am afraid I didn’t give them the stable routine they needed.
Why do we sometimes have to be a granny before we get it?

Pets raised in mill situations and the unknowing individuals who support these operations by buying their new puppies and kittens at pet stores.

Do you feel sad that the unknowing buyers don’t know about their endorsement.

@ Oasis: I do. I have several friends who have “discovered” that their sickly pet (which was purchased at a pet store) is the product of a puppy mill. It’s hard, because after connecting with their pet, they feel like they have saved it from a terrible life… but they don’t connect that the profit made off of their purchase will go towards buying more pets from mills. They are also left with expensive vet bills and heartache for years because of their unknowing purchase. Don’t get me wrong -I feel more sad for the pets who are bred to death and withstand horrible conditions in these mills, but I also carry a sadness for the unknowing buyers.

My family. We all have an awful relationship. We just went to get our tree and it was one of the worst outings ever! I ended up crying!!!

@dlm: I understand that it is better really to save an animal, but the animals at pet stores need a family just like the ones in shelters.

@Comedian: That makes me sad…sorry your family is having a tough time.

Having something remind me of her,
picking up the phone to call her, then remembering:
Oh yeah. We’re not friends anymore.
