How can I forward my e-mails from my Hotmail to my Gmail?

Asked by MrMontpetit (1843points) December 14th, 2008

It’s been getting annoying checking two or three e-mails every day, and forgetting what e-mail I used with what account when registering on websites. I found the “forward emails to another account” option, but it says I can only forward to a @hotmail, @msn, or @live e-mail address. So is it possible to make all the e-mails that go to my hotmail e-mail addresses to automatically go to my Gmail?

Or, if I can’t do that, is it possible to have an app such as “WebMail Notifier” that’s on Firefox for my Opera browser?

“You’re only able to forward mail to a custom domain or an e-mail address that ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, or live.com. Please try again.”

Is the error I keep getting when trying. (Sorry for the links, it does that automatically)

@MrM, I think there is an explanation on lifehacker.com on how to do this. Apparently it’s made difficult by hotmail not using a POP address, but there are ways around it.

One potential solution would be if you can set an auto-responder on hotmail, you could use that to notify people you’re no longer using the address.

It’s one of those webmail services where they want to lock you in – so no POP access and no free forwarding except to other domains they own. Kinda sucks!

There’s an article here about moving your old messages over.

This forum post seems to think it’s entirely possible to forward between the two – might be worth following his recipe and see if it works.

You can fetch your hotmail via POP3 inside gmail
