Why do I always take off one sock in my sleep?

Asked by aaronbeekay (295points) December 14th, 2008

Almost every night, I go to sleep wearing socks (ankle-height, same socks I wore during the day). Almost every night, I take off the right sock in my sleep. I do this by using my left foot to wriggle into the elastic of the sock near the ankle and push it down off my toes.

I know this is a slow process, because occasionally I wake up with the right sock half-off (about halfway down my foot, bunched up). I have NO IDEA why I might do this—no recurring dreams about socks, no sock trauma in a previous life.

Any thoughts? Am I terminally weird, or is this something other people do too?

You go to bed with same socks you wore in day!?!

What happens if you don’t wear socks to bed at all?

Judi's avatar

I have no idea but I got a giggle out of the question!

This is so weird…I woke up after far too much sleep today with one sock on and one sock off. Never done that before : )

Hey diddly dumpling my son John
Went to bed with his stockings on
One shoe off, one shoe on…

Your right foot knows that it’s so very wrong to be wearing socks to bed. Your left foot doesn’t realize this, so the right sock never gets removed. The right foot is hinting to the left one that its sock should be removed too.

Conclusion: Your feet do not have a symbiotic relationship.

Either that or you have some washing machine in your genetics, and are therefore prone to losing one sock.

Wow! I do the very same thing! Do you suppose there is a ‘Wearing Socks to Bed Anonymous’ (WSTBA) I bet there are more people out there that are just afraid to admit it. And that there are mismatched socks all stuck in the sheets when you go to change them….

Do people not usually wear socks to bed? If I don’t wear socks to bed, my feet get cold.

delirium's avatar

Wearing socks to bed is kind of gross. Socks get sweaty and dirty and ewwwwww.

augustlan's avatar

In the winter I have to wear socks to bed. Otherwise, I can’t sleep because my feet never get warm!

Edited to add: To add to the level of weirdness, I am otherwise naked : )

Electric blankets, people. They exist for a reason!

Judi's avatar

I like my electric mattress pad even better, and I live in California! I think it’s cold if it gets in the 50’s

delirium's avatar

Woaaaah, I didn’t know they made those.

To be clear, I am impervious to all but the absolute worst cold. I can usually deal unless my room is below freezing or close to it. My parents, however, are not.

…......I always take off one sock in my sleep….
And by “Sock” you mean condom…..

If I wear socks to bed, they’re not regular socks, they’re big poofy slipper socks. And I take them off when I’m made aware that my feet have gone from icicles to appropriate-foot-temperature. But this is rare. Usually I just tuck the covers under my feet, almost like a little pocket, and alternate putting one foot over the other until they’re both warm.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

aaron, lol, i’m the opposite. I can’t wear socks to bed because my feet will never warm up. i usually first put the flat of one foot against my calf or thigh, and once it’s warm, then the other one. Even if my feet weren’t cold, I don’t think I could sleep with socks on. I’m just not used to it. It feels weird.

PS This question is awesome! I love it!

I also wear socks to bed. Every morning, somehow, I find both socks on the floor next to my bed. I’ve never once only woken up to one sock on. I must have different genes.

I do the exact same thing! I was going to ask this question but then I noticed it was already asked! It’s happened to me like every night since I can remember! Haha ok well not THAT much, but for a really long time! I’m still not sure why though… Maybe our right feet get warmer faster then our left feet??

90s_kid's avatar

I hate wearing socks to bed.

Perhaps that foot has a secret agenda…

” I always wake up with my right foot without socks…funny thing is I am native american and my father calls me :“sleeps with one sock” dont know…but I have been typing for 2 hours now doing homework and just noticed that I did it while awake…..think it is subconcious…...air conditioning i think….lol! (it does feel good!) PS I also have a thing where if I cant sleep at night I put lotion on my feet and it works like a dream….you might have your internal thermostat in your feet vs. your head….just a theory!

I’ve done the same thing for years. I only thought to google it tonight and this came up. Good to know I’m not the only one :)

I sleep with one sock on & one sock off, I always have to have my right sock off, I feel this balances me out from me feeling to hot or too cold during
the night, and I’m not joking

Vicburge1's avatar

I have to be one of the ones who wakes up with either right sock half off or completely off! Never has it happened to my left sock. I have slept with socks on forever that I can remember. My thinking is my body is starting to get too warm and by taking the sock off it helps cool me off some. But why it is always the right one I just don’t have the answer to that question.
