Yes, I’ve sewn a coat with a just a needle and thread.
The lady at the fabric store thought I was crazy.*

Don’t be lazy with your stitches though.
Told my old roommate to do a sturdier stitch on her dress.
She didn’t. Came home one day wearing a friend’s jacket as a skirt.

* To be fair, the reason why she thought I was crazy was because I had never sewn a coat or followed a pattern before.
And the material that I chose were corduroy and faux fur**. (The thicker the material, the harder it will be to hand sew.)

** MINOR DISCLAIMER. Made a faux fur coat for my niece…with bear ears and a paisley corduroy lining.
I’m not in the habit of sporting faux fur myself.

That’s how they used to make ‘em back in the day, I hear.

You most definitely can! But I’d only suggest that if you’ve got a lot of patience :)

You can, but it will take a lot of time and you need to be a bit of a perfectionist to make it look good.

The seams won’t hold together as tightly as if you had used a machine.

Mzg: They won’t be as clean. Though unless you’re using a serger,
I’d put my hand stitches against your machine stitches any day.

I hear a sew-off at high noon.

Judo: Ha! I was laughing and thinking of the same image when I posted the comment.
You and me, Mzgator. You and me.

On a somewhat related tangent, I once drove over a tumbleweed—in downtown Oakland.
Weird.

You certainly can, it’s just way faster with a machine.

just a question… do you think they had dresses before the advent of the sewing machine?

Look up The Society for Creative Anachronism. I helped hand stitch a few wedding dresses back in my SCA playing days.

@Nimis: just thought I’d let you know my maiden name is Seaux…. Pronounced Sew. Ha ha!

I have hand sewn a quilt. My stitches are not pretty. You would certainly win.

Nimis's avatar

I don’t know. Am feeling a little dubious about going up
against someone whose middle name* is (or sounds like) Sew.
* Well, if you use your maiden as your middle, that is.
