I am looking for a website where I can register books that I liked….For the purpose of
1) remembering the book
2) to get recommendations from the website (kinda like Netflix) for new books to read…..
I have searched on Fluther and Google and can’t find anything….
I know there are websites to create personal libraries….I cannot even find these….
Anything to register books would be helpful….

Perchik Thank you! Have you used this site…?
@snoopy Yes I’ve used it frequently. I love it! I’ve got it integrated through my facebook, so my friends books come up on my feed as well.
Facebook has some applications that do this. I use weRead, and apart from having to configure it so that you don’t get their emails all the time, I find it’s pretty cool. I like it mostly because I can see what my friends have read and thus if I see them in real life I can bring up the book for a fun chat.
damien I remembered that question but couldn’t find it….! Thanks!!
Booklamp is supposedly a “Pandora for books”, i.e. it analyses books to find books with similar pace, tone, perspective, etc. to recommend similar books. I’m not sure if you can actually use that already, though.
Thanks Vincentt & DynamicD!
I think this is the actual Booklamp site
:)
I’ve been using both LibraryThing and Readernaut. LibraryThing’s focus is mostly on cataloging, and it does have a recommendation feature. Readernaut’s focus is more on actual reading (keeping track of what you’ve read and want to read, writing notes about what you’ve read, etc.), but it doesn’t do recommendations. Also, it’s still a closed beta (but I received my invite very shortly after signing up for one). I like it a lot, though. (While it doesn’t do recommendations, I like looking at what other people have read and what they’ve written about it.)
It seems the the top 3 are Goodreads, LibraryThing and Shelfari.
See this interesting link for a comparison:
http://booksellerchick.blogspot.com/2008/10/goodreads-shelfari-and-librarything.html
Of note: LibraryThing allows you to register only 200 books for free. Thereafter there is a fee. Shelfari also apparently accesses your email list and sends invites to your email list members (????). This seems a bit much….
Still checking…
Thanks to all who have posted!
Thanks Syz!
I have played around on goodreads and shelfari, which both appear to be listing and social networking sites.
www.whatshouldireadnext.com is more along the lines of what I am looking for (recommendations based on what I like and don't like).
Thanks for the suggestions and please add more if you come across any other sites :)
Is it just me or is goodreads difficult to use in that i’m finding it hard to find some of the books i have read in the search results…even when everything is spelt correctly and searched under either author or title?
@lynne I found it easiest to add books via Shelfari (it has an auto-fill feature, affiliated through Amazon). Although no recommendation (like a Netflix for books).
The best as far as actually recommending books to read based on what you have read thus far is www.whatshouldireadnext.com
The downside to this site, is that you have to have the exact title or it cannot find your book….
Most of the sites seem to focus on the social networking aspect of sharing your lists of what you have read w/ others and seeing what your friends have read. That is fine, I suppose…..but I am more interested in getting recommendations.
LibraryThing’s recommendation engine has yet to fail me. Besides the algorithm that recommends books, users also add recommendations, which you can see on the Works pages.
