Best recipe for alcoholic hot chocolate?

Asked by hTownDude (178points) December 21st, 2008

In the mood for some spiked hot cocoa. I was thinking of adding a half shot of rum and a shot of Godiva chocolate liquor. What do you guys do?

Buttershots certainly adds a little taste but it’s not that strong so I find that a little Vanilla Vodka and Buttershots is extremely tasty!

I’d drop in a shot of Kahlua.

Pretty much it goes like this: hot chocolate + alcohol = DELICIOUS.
Some good ones are:

HC and butterscotch schnapps
HC and vanilla vodka
HC and 2 shot coconut rum, 2 shop raspberry liquor
HC and Amaretto
HC and peppermint schapps

If you’re not just using instant hot chocolate, try these:
3 cups milk
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1 cup half-n-half
1/2 cup rum
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup hazelnut liqueur (Frangelico)

Melt chocolate in a double boiler, or whatever method you prefer. In another saucepan heat milk, half-n-half cream and sugar to almost boiling. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Add 1 cup of the hot milk mixture to the chocolate and mix well. Pour into the rest of the milk and stir until smooth. Pour in rum and liqueur. Heat the finished hot chocolate through. This will make a about five or six servings.

OR
1 cup half n’ half
2 cups milk
1/2 cup orange juice
6 oz bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
1/3 cup Grand Marnier

Bring the half and half, milk and orange juice to boiling. In a seperate bowl, add about 2/3 of the mix to the chocolate and mix until smooth. Add the rest and mix again until smooth. Heat the mix and add the Grand Marnier.

I second the Buttershots suggestion. It’s unbelievably, unbelievably yummy. Like, that mug of hot chocolate will be gone in three seconds. :P

Ooh, I never thought of adding alcohol to my hot chocolate. Thanks for the idea—I’m gonna get on this now!

The only experience of alcoholic hot chocolate is the Spanish kind la mumba… brandy and hot chocolate, very simple but very lovely – don’t think there’s anything else to add to it…maybe a bit of cream?

I have buttershots at home to make buttery nipples. I’m going to try it in my hot chocolate. That sounds really good!!

I actually just invented a new recipe tonight. Got home late, felt a little creative, and decided i wanted to brew up some hot chocolate…

grabbed a bag of hot chocolate, mixed with:

1/2 oz. kahlua
1/2 oz. baileys
2 oz. milk

lace with chocolate syrup.

drop it down into a mug, fill with boiling water.
stir.

..and get what I call The Perfect Hot Chocolate.

enjoy.

Peppermint Schnapps is my favorite thing to add to hot chocolate. Tastes like mint chocolate chip ice cream, but warm and alcoholic.
