Those are the grip? They allow you to grip the pen.

No, they aren’t, the grips are smooth plastic, but inside there are lines that wrap around similar to a barcode

Ahhh, those! I was thinking about these. Hrm, I’ve always wondered.

Heh, yea… ó_ó

isn’t that the ink? showing you where it is, in a stylized way

warpling's avatar

I don’t think so. I just checked my dead pen and it has more lines than my brand new uniball which only has a few at the top. They seem to be created by some radial fins on the inside if you know what i mean.

wow. this is getting crazy now. I’ll have to find one of those pens and inspect it. . .

richardhenry's avatar

Yeah, I think it’s just their way of showing you the ink level. I’ve text AQA to see if they can tell me.

warpling's avatar

I just looked up what AQA is, I wish we had that service! Thanks!

Still no reply yet. Usually they reply immediately. I guess this is a question they don’t already have the answer for.

AHA! “The gel ink contained in Uniball pens is prone to clotting if it remains stationary for too long. Because of this, the pens contain periodic discs down the length of the ink well so that the ink constantly circulates as the pen is used. This keeps the pen writing smoothly. From a phone call with Uniball.”

Are you serious?! Thank you so much! You have answered one of life’s many questions and I’m sure not just for me!

Heh, now we know!

Just saw your comment; I didn’t ring them, AQA did! That was their text. They really will answer anything. Glad I could help though!
