Where is math discussed?

Asked by finkelitis (1907points) December 28th, 2008

I’m looking for websites, op-eds, news outlets, blogs, or any place to find people’s opinion about math, math education, the place of mathematics in culture, or any related topics. Know of any?

I’d try your local university and ask people in the Math department. There are math conferences and I’ve seen math related magazines and plenty of math puzzles in scientific magazines. I’m not that familiar with any specific groups (aside from the MAA) but calling a few math professors to get a sense of their favorites might be a good place to start.

Good suggestion! The MAA website actually has an archive of news stories, which is one of the things I wanted.

Uh… wow! I wasn’t expecting that. Though I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Thanks, laureth.

I actually started following that blog at laureth’s suggestion. It’s a good read some times. Yay math!

Try Usenet discussions. Mathforum @ Drexel at this link:

has a lot discussion relating to math (both high school and post-secondary… it accesses Usenet discussions)

None of the above suggestions come anywhere close to the awesomeness of this very, very busy math forum of busy math problem solvers:
