Erm, a bit more information for the nerds, please.

You could start with
*your OS
*your graphics card, if you know
*your monitor
*why you want 256-color mode

Of course, I’m a Mac/Linux geek, not a Windows geek, but I could probably figure it out given that information.

The OS question is the big one here. I am going to assume Windows.

Right click on a empty spot on the Desktop (no icons) and select Properties. Click the tab on the right and it will let you choose the color mode. I’m running from memory here and I am pretty drunk, and a pretty drunk. I could be wrong.

If you’re trying to run a program or game in 256, just right-click the file icon, select “properties,” > “compatibility,” then check the “Run in 256 colors” box. Ah, Windows.

I wonder if any redneck morons can help with advice on a scope for my gun or maybe some uptight liberal faeries can give me fashion advice.

lrk's avatar

As a computer geek, I don’t take particular offense to the term “nerd,” but I’ve never heard a consistent definition of the word.

@ctimm, what is the other crap that pops up when you attempted to do what knotmyday suggested?

bodyhead's avatar

Irk,

Hey nerd, can you help me? Doesn’t offend you?

lrk's avatar

@body If he had asked it with that phrasing, it probably would have; the “hey” makes the query more combative.

I find nothing directly offensive about the word “nerd”; I have not heard it consistently used as a slur. I also don’t view it as an offensive stereotype (e.g., faeries), because “nerd” is sometimes syononymous with “computer expert”—e.g., sort of like saying “hey, can any fashionistas give me some fashion advice?”

bodyhead's avatar

I do say hey a lot both in writing and in person. It does make it sound more combative. I’ll work on that. No one has ever pointed that out before. Thank you.

From Merriam-Webster
nerd : an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person ; especially : one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits <computer nerds>
