What are your thoughts and feelings on acrylic nails?

Asked by saranwrapper (2095points) January 6th, 2009

I just got some, mostly as a joke. I bite my nails, so I thought it would be funny. They look pretty fake but I’m really into the itch relief they provide. Do people not like them? Do they look awful? Are they unsexy? Am I pretty?

Doesn’t matter how pretty of a girl you are. Fake nails are still tacky in my opinion.

I think so too, but they make me laugh when I look at my hands. An area that is usually not funny.

I have a friend who gets her nails (gel acrylics?) done at a salon. They look loads better than her natural, non-existent nails. I think if they’re done well, it can look nice.

I like them, I think they look nice on people if they’re fine right. I’ve had them a couple of times but they really mess up your nails afterwards.

I disagree – I got simple, french-tip acrylic nails, and I felt much more feminine after that. I am really a tom-boy girl, and absolutely HATE anything girly or cutesy or purse-y or pink, but getting nails seemed to…soften me up a bit. Make me more approachable. And my husband likes it. Seriously, I have never been hit on more often (even looking really gross) than after I got nails, it’s very strange. HOWEVER….when my husband got sick, I was caught up in caretaking and lapsed on fills for about a month and a half, and by the time I went back, as they tried to take them off we discovered my nails had actually grown into the acrylic, and basically taking them off required shredding my nails.

They are a wonderful blessing when a nail breaks badly or splits. I peel (pry) them off as soon as the trouble spot has grown out.

Yes, you are pretty saranwrapper but I never did get the whole “fake” thing. Fake nails, hair, boobs, etc.. I think women are most beautiful in their natural state. Maybe a little lipgloss, blush and mascara but that’s it.

I think they are fine if they are done properly. You get what you pay for. If you get them done thick or rediculously long they will look fake, which just makes you look cheap and silly.

Gross and tacky in my mind. Creepy too.

They make my skin crawl.

I use to get mine done but it became too expensive and they always looked bad from working. Now I just buy clear glue-on nails and cut them down and paint them. They are cheap and last about a week and I don’t have the up keep. I had the acrylic ones on once and hit my fingertip really hard and it took my entire fingernail off. The glue ons will just pop off.

I couldn’t live without them! My manicurist is good though. She makes them very thin and rounded. I think it looks more feminine that way.

fake nails are really tacky. Unless you have a good manicurist who could do them really natural adn not all long and pink looking.

funny, the ladies @ work were talking about it today. Seems like they love it…

I should not be here… I am leaving now…

i like them as long as the acrylic is smooth and there is no acrylic “bump” present in the middle on the bottom of the nail. However, i prefer gel ! and i will never do them myself, instead i go to a nail salon downtown called ‘Hollywood nails’ . I can never get them exactly the way i want! :/

I think they’re really pretty. I could never afford them and I think the feel of having something on my finger that didn’t belong there would bug me but I do like the way they look.

My nails grow well with Rejvocote. I once had acyclic nails and they caused me do get a fungus infection. The salons do not disinfect their equipment well. They are not clean.

dani6119's avatar

@philosopher – What is Rejvocote and where do I find it? My nails are always breaking on me.

dani6119's avatar

@jessturtle23 – What kind do you buy and how do you cut them? I would like to try this. I can’t afford the acrylic.
