Best site to read evaluations of colleges/universities?

Asked by BronxLens (1539points) January 7th, 2009

A friend is considering going back to complete her BA in criminal justice and her preferred school because of location is Mercy College, NYC. Where can she go and read Amazon-like evaluations about the school, by people who have attended it? Any other site that allows one to compare it with, say, John Jay College of Criminal Justice?

well this isnt the most practical but it would probably get you the best idea, use myspace or facebook to contact some people who have graduated from that university recently and from the past and get their opinions on the school. Then you can see how it changed over time and what they honestly thought of it rather then trusting some written article posted on the internet that may or may not be a reliable truthful source.

Myspace also has a feature where current students of a school can rate their professors. I love this, and use it often to see what other people think about professors when I am enrolling for courses at my school. Learning about the professors at an institution can give you a lot of insight into the school overall.

@BronxLens Check out this link

At a minimum, it should give you a jumping off point….good luck!

(I found the link when I googled the US News & World Report rankings….which is what I am familiar w/.....)

I’m not sure if there are user reviews, but Macleans has annual rankings of Canadian post-secondary schools based on various criteria.

This probably helps you out… not at all.

I've used CollegeProwler.com.

It “rates” the college in many areas, like the quality of its academics, social life, food, greek life, etc. Also, students of that college are allowed to join the site for free and write commentary on their own college.
I wouldn’t rely solely on it, but it can give you a beter idea of the college’s strengths and weaknesses.

The U.S. News and World Report puts out a yearly ranking, but that’s not quite “reviews” per se. It is, however, a reliable and respectable method of evaluating institutions.

I just read about this new website: Unigo.com. It was started by a Wesleyan grad and looks pretty awesome – it has reviews of colleges all over the country “by students, for students.” There are reviews, videos, articles, etc, all posted by current college students to give you a sense of what life is really like at their schools.
