How do I secure my internet connection?

Asked by BoyWonder (811points) January 8th, 2009

I have Verizon DSL and I want to secure my connection. Anyone can park up in front my house and get free internet service and I’m scared that someone might try to hack my server. How do I lock it off? I want to password-protect it.

Do you have a wireless router? If you don’t they can’t do it by piggybacking. Or Wardriving.

WEP and WPA have been cracked using aircrack, think WPA2 is ok, you need to enable this on your router (if it supports it) and set a password then enter the password on your computer when you connect (should only need to do this once). Details of how to log into your router will be in the manual.

Actually you may want to leave it open then the RIAA can’t sue you.

Ok, I plugged my ethernet wire into my laptop from my desktop.
I entered my ip address into the URL box and this screen popped up asking for my user name and password when I try to go into settings. How do I bypass this? Where would I find my user name and password?? I never set up any password.
