Is this a good idea? or just annoying?

Asked by johnny0313x (1855points) January 8th, 2009

Okay so I am aware that music playing on websites is annoying,, and I fully agree that it is. However I was thinking about on my site have a short (5–10 sec clip) auto play right when you get on the page and NOT repeat. That way when someone listens to that opening beat of the song in their car or wherever it might make them think of the website and come back to check it out and eventually associate that sound with the site in their head. Do you think this is a good idea or would it just be annoying?

It doesn’t matter how long the clip is, all unexpected sound is annoying. Most people will already be listening to music when they visit your site, and if they’re sat in silence, it’s because they like it that way. There’s no need to confuse your users with sound that they can’t control, didn’t expect, and likely is only interrupting their music listening or silence appreciation.

annoying. I hate websites that use music. I am constantly listening to music, and when something interferes with that i tend to get pissed lol

I agree with the above two. Unnecessary and Irritating. And no, they will not associate the song with your site. They might, though, stop visiting your site so as to avoid the music. So I vote for silence too.

okay that is kinda what I thought, I was just trying to plan some ideas to make people come back , I suppose the content will have to be enough haha.

@johnny0313x Make your content good, don’t do anything tricksy, and be honest. Your users will love you for it. Good luck. :)

Any amount of autoplaying music is bad. There is a reason I edited my hosts file so all attempts to load myspace redirect to localhost. It would wake my girlfriend up while she was sleeping.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@jp you mean Allie?

jrpowell's avatar

Allie is my wife. The girlfriend is not allie.

im confused…..and its not about the music issue lol does someone care to elaborate on thie wife/GF issue at hand? lol

Ha.. Allie and I are not married yet. We just like to pretend that we are. She referrers to it as a “joke” and I call it “practice.” I think things will work out.

There is another woman? I guess it’s karma.

Oh… Snap.

I call dibs on my spot as wife.
Yes.. I just dibbed it.

Allie got shotgun. It looks like she is the one.

Wait, what. Allison Powell, that is my sisters name. That is perverted. This whole thing is falling apart.

And your last name only has six letters. Uh oh..

Vincentt's avatar

@johnpowell – why don’t you turn off the sound while she’s sleeping? :P

richardhenry's avatar

@Vincentt I’m guessing he likes to quietly listen to music. MySpace is often far louder than anything else. God, I hate MySpace.

Vincentt's avatar

@richardhenry – thank God for earplugs ;-)

Not that that means I don’t hate MySpace :P

Nothing makes me close a website faster than hearing music. It pisses me off. If I do associate your website with a song I hear somewhere else (and that’s not likely to happen, unless you choose a very obscure song), it will be, “oh, this is the song that that crappy website played before I closed it and never went back.” This is probably not the reaction you want.

lol no it certainly is not what i was going for haha
