Can you get too much sleep? And if so can this cause headaches?

Asked by nebule (16452points) January 15th, 2009

As I’ve expressed on a number of occasions I’m a single mum with a 2 year old. I doesn’t sleep so good and is often up in the night a couple of times (be it briefly). So i’m pretty tired all the time.

I do however get to bed before ten 6/7 nights a week. I generally get him to bed between 7 and 8 and i get in bed then to read and I’m asleep by 9.30 at the latest…my eyes just won’t keep open when reading…

We wake up a couple of times in the night and then up at 7 generally and i’m waking up with headaches. They disappear mid morning but come back late afternoon. I’m wondering whether i’m getting too much sleep?

But why would i still fall asleep reading if this was the case…surely i wouldn’t be tired if i was getting enough sleep…. (maybe the reading thing is a different question?)

Well, 7 hours is the optimum for adults it’s said.
What I’ve found after sleeping for a long time is I sometimes get headaches simply because I haven’t had a morning drink or eat.
Get up and rehydrate that head of yours! Your brain is 75% water, and it sure ain’t gaining any when you;re just lying there.

Is it just your head that hurts?

loser's avatar

Of course, if you do what you’re doing in your picture while you’re sleeping, I think I know why your head hurts…

nebule's avatar

@cage really…i guess that’s part of the 90% we don’t use then eh!! ;-) must drink more water…must drink more water

@loser well…no the top of my neck hurts too (near my brain)...so is that just brain still??? I generally feel like crap all the time…. and lol @ the picture comment x

@lynneblundell If we’re getting into percentages here’s a freaky one.
Thanks to the distance between (and size of) nuclei of atoms and their electrons, we are technically all 99.99999999etc nothing!
And everything around us!

@cage WOW!!! OMG…. that’s _really_interesting… creates a massive shift in perception…

You might just need a different pillow.

@lynnblundell does it feel like a hangover headache?

nebule's avatar

@tennesseejac what a…. pleasant name lol… I’m wondering what it refers to… or are we getting back to the most grossest word question again…. hmmmm….

tennesseejac's avatar

@lynneblundell One theory is that serotonin and other brain neurotransmitters fluctuate during sleep. These variations can trigger the onset or worsening of headache pain.

nebule's avatar

um….no it’s a bit too far back in the head to be a hangover headache… i usually get those at the front, middle and side area… this is more of a heavy dense feeling in the back of the head….

I’ve been dreaming/...A LOT recently… are neurotransmitters and serotonin part of the dream process???

nebule's avatar

…and thinking about it…I’ve been recently getting like ..shivers over the left side of my head…you know like when you get goosebumps…like when someone is walking over your grave… but just on the left side of my head.. lynne has a bit of a hypchondriac streak for anyone listening . its probably the pillow eh….?

tennesseejac's avatar

i would start with a new pillow.

cage's avatar

@lynneblundell if it’s so amazing… maybe you should GA me ;) eh EEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHH ;) *nudge nudge

nebule's avatar

…there you go cage…. you needin’ some lurve this morning..?? you were right though…you did deserve the lurve for that one…my apologies for not doing it unprompted x

nebule's avatar

you is definitely in need of lurve…. where’s your lady when you need her eh???

cage's avatar

@lynneblundell, I have to second what JC said about starting with a new pillow. If you’re getting pain partially in the back of your neck, it sounds like perhaps your pillows aren’t supporting your properly. Does your head ache when you get up in the middle of the night when you get up, or just in the morning?

You’re bringing back memories of being overworked, having a small children and never getting enough sleep…

I wake up a lot of times with a headache because of sinus problems. After I do a saline nasal irrigation and take a zyrtech, usually I’m ok.

When I sleep too much the headache is worse. It’s happened to me since high school. I don’t worry about it too much. Drink TONS of water so you can rule it out as a possibiliy. When I chug water, it makes it not as bad sometimes.

About being tired all the time: Don’t drink a bunch of coffee or cokes. It will actually bring your overall engergy level down. I would do a google search on “hi energy foods” and maybe change your diet a little.

Good luck.

nebule's avatar

@cage i didn’t realise she was that far away…you poor boy…but i’m guessing she’s _all that!

@AlfredaPrufrock am definitely going to get new pillow…or at least be more consistent with my pillow choices… and yes…overworked, children etc…its all gravy eh!

@bodyhead thank you for reminding to not drink too much coffee… because i only drink decaf i think its ok to splash out and have a few cups in a day rather than maybe just one….but i do remember someone telling me once that decaf can be considered worse for you because of all the chemicals they use in getting rid of the caffeine…

again…must drink more water…!!!! pops off to get herself some

Aaaw man lynn, I overslept once and my head was throbbing!!! I don’t know what it is, but gee, I hated that day.
Whatelse I noticed is that when I woke up at 3PM on the overslept day, I was almost too lazy to even get up!

cage's avatar

@90s_kid that’s just being lethargic. Happens to me all the time when I lay in.

90s_kid's avatar

But I am not “lethargic” when I normally wake up.

nebule's avatar

Update: I know this wasn’t very scientifically correct but i drank lots of water yesterday and i slept with different pillows at the optimum angle for head and neck comfort. I ended up getting up at 1.30 for a pee and at 5.00…much to my joy… I have a little bit of a headache this morning but my neck doesn’t feel half as bad…so…

as it is friday today and i most certainly will be drinking copious amounts of wine tonight i’m most likely to have a headache tomorrow…but will keep up the good work on the pillow front and let you know!!! x

cage's avatar

@90s_kid . No, lethargy comes around form you lying in. Or just lying around the house all day.
I don’t know how it works, and it doesn’t make any sense to me. But it’s like the more relaxing you do, the more relaxed you get, the more tired you get.

@tennesseejac There was a line in an original Star Trek series episode where the aliens referred to humans as “ugly bags of mostly water”
