What is going to happen to the airplane that landed in the Hudson River?

Asked by sferik (6121points) January 17th, 2009

Pilot Chesley B. Sullenberger III heroically landed US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River, avoiding a disastrous crash.

All of the passengers survived, but what will come of the airplane itself? Will it be towed to shore? Will it sink and remain at the bottom of the Hudson?

I think it’d be pretty cool if they drained the fuel out then let it sink. In the future if we forget about it, our descendants will be like “WOW WHAT SHITTY PLANES THEY HAD THEN!”
Destroyed by some birds!

Wouldn’t they remove it in case things leaked into the river? Like fuel?
I didn’t even think the Hudson was deep enough to let it sink fully.

Last I heard, they were lifting it out of the river today. They’re going to study the wreckage (the engines in particular) to see how to further minimize damage from bird hits.

I think I read they had moored it something… a barge, a dock, Bush’s legacy, BofA’s stock price. Something that will keep it afloat.

They will rescue the plane. It will be carefully removed from it’s cold, watery bed and cradled to a warm warehouse or hanger. Once there it will have it’s black box ripped out of it’s chest and all it’s parts disassembled in order to discover why it crashed.

As a non-New Yorker I have to ask if anyone else suddenly realized how wide the Hudson River is? I mean that was an A-320. Certainly not a 747 but not a RJ either.

Does anyone know precisely when they’re going to remove it? I don’t have any plans for today. Maybe I’ll go watch them remove it if I can figure out when that’s going to happen.

They are going to study the cause probably, than recycle it to whatever man-made thought is capable.

I was surprised at how wide the river is, too.

@Sueanne_Tremendous: Have you ever been to NYC? Just curious. :)

@ asmo: I fly into and out of New York frequently but I have never, ever stepped foot out of either airport. It’s on the schedule to do but never seems to get done. I am dying to go.

Oh Sueanne! You’re missing so much! Next time you go, get a layover for a night, see something on Broadway, visit the Empire State Building, see the Statue of Liberty! Look the hell around. Oh, and go into Chelsea if you’re feeling brave and get pizza on 23rd St.
