Is there a secret to vibrato?

Asked by iAMi (54points) January 20th, 2009 from iPhone

Or is it something that comes with singing a lot?

When you get older, your tone naturally gets less straight. It’s annoying when people force it, though.

Okay thanks! I’ve been taking singing lessons for a month now, although i’ve been singing for about two years, and i still don’t have a hint of vibrato.

I’m pretty young, but i’ve been told that my pitch is straighter than lots of singers.

well, i guess the trick is to start out rough, so shifting pitch pretty wildly, and then slowly starting to…shortening the shifting range, untill your shift is so minimal it sounds like a vibrato…then again, i’m a guitar player, not a singer

Then you have a very good voice for classical/baroque choral music. Vibrato did not become popular until the romantic era.

But you don’t WANT vibrato. You want a nice, steady, even sound. No warbling.

I got it through practice. It does come with time. Some have vibrato naturally, but just keep working on it. How much vibrato are you trying to have?

I was always told if you have it great, if you don’t great! A straight tone is always as beautiful sounding as a voice with vibrato. Make sure not to force it! It sounds weird and may strain your chords!

I want my vibrato to begin oscillating near the end of the note, so it gradually builds… faster and faster. I’m not sure if you know what i mean. Ya know?

Whatever you do, just don’t use too much vibrato once you develop it. I find it’s greatly overused/abused by far too many artists of late.

I think it’s kind of genetic as well. Different people just have different kinds of voices. I have a friend who I was in chorus with me in high school. She has the most amazing operatic voice, some vibrato and all, and she’s barely 18.

Vibrato isn’t a particularly difficult thing to achieve, I don’t personally believe. But maybe that’s because I’ve always been able to do it.

Also – to clear things up. Vibrato is a conscious decision, it’s not like a passive thing that your voice does. Some people were talking about vibrato as if they weren’t in control of it, or as if it was gonna manifest when it isn’t needed.
