Do most cats pick the one inconvenient spot on a bed for themselves?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) January 24th, 2009

I have a 78“x 80” bed, left over from my marriage to a tall guy. I use about 30” on the left side. Why does Milo go into his coma phase on the spot where my torso belongs when there is an acre of free space where he will not be unceremoniously dumped on the floor?

The spot they pick is convenient for them.

@DrBill: He may force me to a convent. As a corollary, why does he choose to march across me at 4:00AM when he has the choice of so many easier routes?

@gailcalled: It’s really very simple; he loves you, you’re his person, and he wants to be close to you. He’s very sure of you. You’re both lucky to have each other!

@bythebay: Given some of his recent behavior, he is certainly lucky to have me.

@gailcalled: We do tend to test those we love, don’t we?

Milo’s just keeping the spot warm for you. It sounds like love to me. :)

There is no such thing as a subodinate cat.

when I used to let our cat sleep with us he’d always sleep on top of my head…very frustrating sometimes

@gailcalled – mine does the same. We have a queen sized bed, and have been informed by our 3 feline bosses that we are allowed 2 square inches of the bed, which is located in the top left paw corner, and if the bed covers happen to cover my arse I should consider myself lucky!!! I have also been told not to complain when our boss lady artfully drapes a sock across my face at 2:00am, because it is a gift that I should be grateful for!!

Both my cats walk up the whole side of my body, stand on my shoulder and meow in my face…in the middle of the night. I don’t know why, but they seem to be seeking reassurance that we’re not dead. All I have to do is pat them once on the head and they’ll settle down to sleep. On top of my shoulder, or on my feet. I am positive there are more comfortable open spots for them to sleep, but they seem to prefer the precarious positions, teetering on top of my anatomy!

@miasmom When I was a little girl, my first cap slept draped on top of my head, too :)

We always referred to this as stapling you to the bed. They want to be in the best spot, natch. Convenience has nothing to do with it. It is all about superiority. Where you want to be is incontestably the best spot. And you are not supposed to leave it to him or kick him out. You are supposed to stay in it so he can occupy the same physical space as you simultaneously.

As for marching across your body, that might have to do with convenience, but it could also be that your attention has wandered.

Check this for a glimpse of a cat caught in the act while the master is sleeping.

@miasmom & @augustlan: There’s clearly a pattern of conspiracy here! My cat slept wrapped around the top of my head when I was young, too. I wonder if they’re trying to keep us warm, trying to keep themselves warm, or they’re absorbing our brain cells while we sleep?

@jeruba: That video explains why some cats sleep all day, doesn’t it? I was tired after watching it.

My maternal grandmother would have a fit over this question.

she believed a cat stole your breath while you slept

@Jeruba; Beyond hilarious. The only activity missing was the attack on the phone cord (the only one I have, for power outages.)

In the early days, before I became more cautious, I rolled over in my sleep once and found myself on the floor.

@bythebay I was told that they like the heat leaving your body through your head…I laugh when I think about him sleeping there though. :)

On a side note, we had a guest speaker at our church who talked about cat and dog theology, it was very humorous. A dog thinks, you feed me, you walk me, you take care of me, you must be God. A cat thinks, you feed me, you pet me, you take care of me, I must be God. :)

@miasmom: That’s so accurate and so funny.

@gailcalled: You better be careful in how you treat your resident deity!!

@all; Take a few minutes to watch the YouTube link from Jeruba. It will make you laugh and will confirm what you have all told me.

Also, always remember that cats evolved in the desert and hence like to be warm as well as comfortable. You are soft and squishy and, at 98.6 degrees, much warmer than the couch.

I also suspect that cats pay absolutely no attention to what might be inconvenient to their people. For a cat, it is all about his needs, not yours.

yes, they do

It’s their job.
